Long before the age of Gaga, there was born a legend like no other: one of the most iconic female entertainers of all time. She has been in the music industry for decades and her popularity has never waned.

This gem Madonna Louise Ciconne, known to her fans as simply Madonna. Today, August 16, marks the star’s 53rd birthday, though staying true to her famed image of a sex-symbol, the mother of four still looks amazing, as her 24-year-old boyfriend Brahim Zaibat would agree.

Since releasing the song ‘Everybody’ as her first release in 1982, Madonna was dubbed the Queen of Pop and gathered a tremendous resume of awards and chart topping songs.

According to Billboard the singing sensation holds the number one spot for most top 10 Billboard Hot 100 singles (37), has had 55 titles on the top 100, seven Hot 100 number one songs in the ’80s, 40 number one songs on Billboard’s Dance/Club Play Songs chart and 19 Top 10 albums on the Billboard 200.

She won the American Music Award’s title of favorite pop/rock female video artist in 1987 for the song “Live to Tell” after having been nominated for five other titles starting in 1985. She was nominated for six more titles and won favorite dance single in 1991 for the song “Vogue.” Following another three AMA nominations, she last won International Artist of the Year in 2003.

Madonna has won numerous other music awards, including four Arion Music Awards titles, several American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) awards, and over 30 Billboard Music awards between 1985 and 2008. In addition to music awards, Madonna has made appearances in shows and movies, directing two and winning awards for her role in the musical “Evita.” She has also received awards for extensive charity work acting as a humanitarian.

But it wasn’t just her voice or awards that enabled Madonna to transcend decades as a leading lady in the entertainment industry. Her songs and her looks were the source of much controversy as she she expressed female sexuality like it had never been displayed before. Through her words and risque outfits she embodied a bold and daring free-wheeling attitude that was not initially accepted by all, yet made her a beloved legend. She was also famous for changing her appearance constantly; with different haircuts and styles, she became a trendsetter and fashion wonders.

Proof of birthday girl Madonna’s still-existing presence and influence in pop culture exists in comparisons between her and newer artists, remaining buzz and interest in her life, and appearances and references in other songs and shows of today. For example, the popular show about a school singing club, “Glee,” devoted a whole show to the legend, performing Madonna hits like “Papa Don’t Preach,” “Like A Prayer,” “Vogue,” “Like a Virgin,” “4 Minutes,” and six other songs. The show intertwined its plot around the messages in Madonna’s songs.

The idolized Rock and Roll Hall of fame member will be gracing the music world once more with the release of a new album. The album will be her 12th studio album, proving that her birthday is simply the passing of another year and that nothing, not time, nor age can stop the Queen of Pop.
