North Fork Century Bike Tour has just been cancelled.
The tour was supposed to set out in Greenport at Greenport High School Sunday, August 28 and gives riders a choice of a 100-mile full century down to a 25-mile route through the beautiful North Fork.
The tour has been canceled due to the anticipated arrival of Hurricane Irene– Hurricane Irene is predicted to bring projected 105 mph sustained winds and 6-12 inches of rain.
Martin Flatley, Chief of Police of Southold Town Police Department reportedly shot down the tour saying that there is no possible way to ensure the participants of your ride the safety they deserve while traversing the roadways in Southold Town with these conditions.
Currently, according to the National Hurricane Center, Hurricane Irene is forecasted to make direct landfall on Long Island this Sunday. The eye of the storm passing through central and western Nassau sometime Sunday afternoon.
Although the bike tour has a no-refund policy, that includes bad weather, the company behind the bike tour is hoping to plan a makeup ride. The bike tour may join with Bike the Night on September 9, also in Greenport, for a “doubleheader” type of ride. Bike the Night starts at 11:59 p.m. on September 9 and ends with breakfast at the beach at dawn on October 10 and then bikers would start the re-scheduled North Fork ride on the morning of Saturday September 10.
