Rich Degnan to Give Speech at Next GLIRC Meeting

The featured speaker at the Tuesday, Sept. 20 Open General Meeting of the Greater Long Island Running Club (GLIRC) will be Massapequa High School Head Track and Field Coach Rich Degnan. The meeting will be held in the Auditorium of the Plainview-Old Bethpage Public Library, at 999 Old Country Road in Plainview, starting promptly at 8 p.m. The general public is most cordially invited to attend.

Coach Degnan has had a long and storied career as a runner and a coach. He was a five time High School All American track runner in the 1970s at Holy Trinity High School. He coached the Bay Shore High School track and field team, and then was the Head Coach of men’s and women’s cross country and track and field teams at C.W. Post until C.W. Post’s unfortunate decision to drop the sport in 2007.

Since 2007 he has been working to develop the Massapequa High School Program into one of the finest on Long Island. He also serves as the Track and Field chair of the Long Island Association of USA Track & Field.

Also featured at the meeting will be the presentation of checks to Long Island OCEANS and that organization’s battle against gynecological cancers, and to the Opening Word Program, an education program conducted by the Dominican Sisters to enable poor uneducated women to become productive members of society. The funds presented to these worthy groups come from the proceeds of the 2011 Runner’s Edge Long Island Women’s 5 Kilometer Run.
