Remembering the Local Victims of 9/11

Memorial services planned through weekend

Sunday, Sept. 11 will be the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center.

There are many local memorial services available for residents. The Farmingdale Community Summit walk and Nassau County’s ceremonies were scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 8 and Wednesday, Sept. 7, respectively.

On Saturday, Sept. 10 a Memorial Vigil will be held by candlelight on Broadway in downtown Bethpage. Service begins at 6:30 p.m.; the candlelight vigil begins at 7:15 p.m. Bring your own candle or light; featuring patriotic music. There will be acknowledgement of all Town of Oyster Bay residents who were lost on 9/11, a moment of silence and music by a piper band. Call (516) 935-9597 for more information.

The Farmingdale United Methodist Church at 407 Main St. (corner of Grant Ave.), will be open to the community from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 11 for quiet reflection and prayer to mark the tenth anniversary of the events of 9-11-01. Everyone is welcome.

Also on Sunday, Sept. 11 residents are invited to join with the members of the North Massapequa Fire Department, who will be hosting a solemn ceremony. The ceremony will take place at 9 a.m. in front of the North Massapequa Fire Department Headquarters, 1000 North Broadway, North Massapequa. The ceremony will provide a fitting backdrop for a place of remembrance. As part of the agenda, the names of local victims of the attacks will be read out loud. Anyone attending the ceremony can include the name of a loved one lost on September 11 to be read at the ceremony. To do this, residents can either drop the name off on a card at the fire department headquarters’ mailbox or leave the name on the answering machine of the chief’s office (516) 579-0900, ext. 1610.

On Saturday, Sept. 10 and Sunday, Sept. 11 the Nassau County Firefighters Museum and Education Center at Museum Row will be open, free of charge. The Museum will be exhibiting “Live of Service: Celebrating the Heroes of September 11th.” For more information visit: www.ncfiremuseum.org.
