Veterans Brunch
Assemblyman Michael A. Montesano (15th District), Assemblyman Tom McKevitt (17th District) and Assemblyman David McDonough (19th District) will be hosting the 4th annual Veterans Brunch at the Hicksville VFW, 320 S. Broadway, Hicksville. Veterans are invited from local VFWs and American Legion Posts throughout the three districts so their service to our country can be honored. Invitations were also extended to Jewish and Vietnam veterans. 10 a.m. to noon.

9/11 National Day of Service/Remembrance
The public is invited to join the Levittown and East Meadow Kiwanis-Family as to remember those lost on Sept. 11, 2001, and honor their memories through a service project making pillow hugs for U.S. soldiers recovering at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and fire fighters recovering in the NUMC Burn unit. The ceremony and project will take place at Levittown Hall, Levittown Pky., Hicksville from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.
LI Cruizin’ For a Cure
The North Shore-LIJ Health System’s community health, core laboratory, cancer and urology departments are teaming up to offer up to 300 prostate screening tests, or PSAs, at the annual LI Cruizin’ For a Cure annual car show from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Sears Automotive Center, Route 106/107 in Hicksville (LIE Exit 41 South/Northern State Exit 35 South). This event is open to the public and will include a special 9/11 memorial ceremony. LI/NYC Area Young Widow/ers
Is holding its “Widowed View” interactive panel of widows and widowers on relevant concerns and issues commonly faced by those who have lost their spouses. This is a moving on group for those past their initial bereavement period. Bring your questions. 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Empress Diner, 2490 Hempstead Tpke., East Meadow. Cost: $10 cash plus min $10 food order, separate checks. RSVP highly recommended, Call 536-1410. This is a non-denominational group of friendly, sociable widows and widowers who are mostly under the age of 60. All ages are welcome and new faces are always showing up at every event. This will help us select panelists from a cross-section of the group.
Young Parkinson’s Support Group
For patients and caregivers under 60 years of age meets on at 7 p.m. at Sunrise Senior Living, 1555 Glenn Curtiss Blvd., East Meadow. Attendance is free, but reservations are required. Library to Welcome 9/11 Survivor, Author
The Westbury Memorial Public Library will commemorate the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks with book discussion and signing with Michael Hingson, a World Trade Center survivor and author of Thunder Dog: The True Story of a Blind Man, His Guide Dog and the Triumph of Trust at Ground Zero. Like its subtitle suggests, Hingson’s book is the story of how blindness and a bond between dog and man saved lives and brought hope during one of America’s darkest days. In Thunder Dog, Hingson, who has been blind since infancy, provides a first-hand account of that tragic Tuesday morning coinciding with a backstory into his personal life and how he never let his lack of sight stop him from achieving his goals. Central Nassau Guidance & Counseling Services
Located at 950 South Oyster Bay Rd., Hicksville. Call 822-4060. The following programs are offered:
•The Community Program open to all people over 60 who are dealing with issues related to drugs or alcohol. This is an opportunity to talk confidentially with your peers as well as having the support and guidance of a skilled professional. Medicare and most other insurances are accepted.
•A support group for those who have family members with mental illness meets Mondays from 7 to 8 p.m. The fee is $5 per family. The staff is comprised of psychiatrists, registered nurses and certified social workers. Call 822-6111.
•An outpatient substance abuse agency offering a Parenting Group on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. This group specializes in parenting issues for substance abusers as well as parents whose children use drugs. All inquiries are confidential.
•Women’s Domestic Issues group provides support and education to women experiencing domestic conflict, child abuse, substance abuse and related issues. The focus will be on education, support as well as empowerment and proactive behavior. The group will be held on Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Preregistration required.
•Young Adult Drug Addiction Group for people 18 to 21 who are recovering from drug addiction. The goals are to enhance skills, increase self-awareness and work toward a drug and alcohol free life. The group meets Thursdays at 8 p.m. All inquiries are confidential.
Exhibit
An ongoing exhibit of rocks and minerals, dinosaurs and fossils, butterflies and moths and historical artifacts and curiosities in Hicksville’s historic 1895 Heitz Place Courthouse. A non-profit metaphysical study group held at Levittown Hall, Levittown Pky., Hicksville. Membership is $15 for individuals; $25 joint membership per year. HUMC Food Pantry Open
Hunger is a real issue facing our local area. In response to this need, the Hicksville United Methodist Church, 130 Old Country Rd., opened a food pantry. The pantry is open on Fridays from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Non-perishable foods, paper goods and hygiene items are given to our neighbors in need. Contact us if you can help in any way. Thrift Shop
The Pretty New Thrift Shop, 238 Main St., Farmingdale. The shop supports the work of Central Nassau Guidance and Counseling Services, Inc., a multi-service mental health and substance abuse agency located in Hicksville. The shop is open Monday-Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and accepts gently used clothing, housewares, furniture and collectibles. Call 420-1394.
