It’s not only a day to honor September 11, 2001 victims and their families but also your own families—September 11 is also National Grandparents Day and this year, its the 32nd anniversary.
Like Mother’s and Father’s Day, today is a time to reflect on those who came before you and love you so dear.
According to Grandparents.com, President Jimmy Carter first signed the proclamation creating a National Grandparents Day in the 1970s, and said grandparents “are usually free to love and guide and befriend the young without having to take daily responsibility for them, they can often reach out past pride and fear of failure and close the space between generations” and that the holiday would recognize “the importance and worth of the 17 million grandparents in our nation.”
In a recent White House press release, Obama too, declared today a day for those who provided the earliest and powerful influence on our lives.
“On National Grandparents Day, we honor the loving presence of these mentors who have contributed immeasurably to the strength of our families and our Nation,” President Obama said in a September 9 statement. “As a country, we understand our welfare is determined by that of all Americans, and it is our responsibility to provide for our grandparents as they have for us. We must keep Social Security strong and viable, while preserving it for future generations. We must strengthen Medicare by making common-sense changes that encourage high-quality care and address wasteful spending.”
“After a lifetime of contributions to our Nation and its economy, seniors have earned this support,” he stated. “I call upon all Americans to take the time to honor their own grandparents and those in their community.”
