Tropical Storm Irene
The Village Department of Public Works has done a remarkable job both during and after the storm. However, the cleanup continues and we ask for your patience as we are doing everything possible to return to normal conditions.
Residents can either place their rubbish at the curb for pickup or drop off their yard waste at the Village Municipal Yard, which is located on Cherry Valley Avenue, south of the Community Park entrance. The hours of operation are Mondays through Fridays from 9 to 11:45 a.m., 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. A permit, in the amount of $15, can be obtained at Village Hall and is in effect for the life of the car.
Railroad Parking Permits
As of Sept. 19, 2011, the village will begin issuing Railroad Parking Permits for the 2011/2012 year. The annual fee is $150 (this equates to less than $.60 per day).
Permits may be obtained at the Village Business Office, 351 Stewart Ave. Residents who already possess a 2010/11 permit will receive a renewal application by mail, which may be returned to the village either by mail or in person. Please review the information provided and correct any erroneous data and/or complete any missing information. A copy of your vehicle registration must accompany your application and check. The 2010/11 parking permits will be honored until Oct. 31, 2011.
Curb, Sidewalk and Road Improvements – 2011
Paving operations have been completed for the year. Sidewalk and curb work remains on Tremont Street and storm-damaged areas. We appreciate your continued patience and ask that you consider everyone’s safety when driving or walking near areas under construction. Any questions should be directed to the Garden City Department of Public Works (Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at (516) 465-4004.
Shop and Dine in Garden City and Enjoy the Experience
There are many things, which make Garden City such an appealing place to live and work. One of these is our viable and welcoming business districts with their fine restaurants, unique shops and regional stores.
Many residents consider shopping and dining in our business districts as “experience shopping” because they meet friends and neighbors along the way and have an opportunity to interact with them. This is in stark contrast to frantically dashing through the crowds in the mall or the big box retailers.
I encourage residents to make a conscious effort to choose Garden City as the place to shop and dine. Customer service, selection and quality are outstanding. While shopping or dining let the merchant know that you appreciate them and all that they offer.
Parking Field #12 – East Side of Franklin Avenue Between 12th and 14th streets
Due to inclement weather earlier in the week, work on Parking Field #12 was delayed. Work in the southern most portion of Parking Field #12 and on 12th Street will be completed by the start of next week. Once this work is completed, Parking Field #12 will be entirely reopened to the public. We thank you for your patience during this much needed infrastructure improvement. Street lighting improvements and some additional minor work within the parking field will be completed in the coming weeks.
If you have any questions, please contact the Garden City Public Works Department at (516) 465-4004 (Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.).
Board of Trustees’ Meeting Schedule
The board of trustees will meet only once in the month of September. The next regularly scheduled meeting will be held on Thursday, Sept. 15 at 8 p.m. I invite all residents to attend board of trustees meetings so as to be thoroughly informed of village issues from a firsthand perspective.
Village’s Website
I invite residents to periodically utilize the village’s website for information regarding the village’s operations, as well as items of seasonal and special interest. The address is www.gardencityny.net. For your convenience, listed on the village’s home page under the Heading of Administration is a sub-heading “Village Map and Key Areas of Interest,” which contains direct links to various schools, parks, the village yard, etc.
