Lady Gaga dedicated a moving version of “Hair” to teen Jamey Rodemeyer at the iHeartRadio music festival in Las Vegas this weekend.
As she sat at her motorcycle piano, she said, “We lost a Little Monster this week.” Gaga said of her dedication to Jamey with the song “Hair,””I wrote this record about how your identity is really all you’ve got when you’re in school.”
As she played the piano and pictures of Jamey appeared on the screen above, Gaga said, “Tonight, Jamey, I know you’re up there looking at us, and you’re not a victim, you’re a lesson to all of us. I know it’s a bit of a downer, but sometimes the right thing is more important than the music.”
“Bullying is for losers,” Gaga added during her performance.
Earlier this month, 14-year-old Jamey Rodemeyer of Buffalo took his own life. As we previously reported, Rodemeyer had once posted an “It’s Gets Better” video, where he shared his experience and thanked Lady Gaga for her musical support.
“Lady Gaga, she makes me so happy. She lets me know that I was born this way and that would be my advice to you from her,” Rodemeyer said in his video. “We were born this way and all you have to do is hold your head up and you’ll go far. That’s all you have to do. Love yourself and you’re set.”
Following the suicide, Lady Gaga vowed to fight bullying and make it illegal.
”Jamey Rodemeyer, 14 yrs old, took his life because of bullying” Gaga tweeted following Rodemeyer’s death, “Bullying must become be illegal. It is a hate crime.”
She announced plans to meet with Obama to discuss the issue. She tweeted, “I am meeting with our President. I will not stop fighting. This must end. Our generation has the power to end it. Trend it #MakeALawForJamey.”
According to MTV, over the weekend, Gaga attended an Obama fundraiser in Los Angeles where she was expected to bring up the topic if the two had a moment together.
