Dee Snider’s Bikers Hit the Road for Babies on Long Island

On Sunday, September 25, 2011, more than 750 die-hard bikers and weekend warriors joined Rock and Roll Hall-of-Famer and Celebrity Chair, Dee Snider (radio personality and lead singer of ’80s rock band, Twisted Sister) and the March of Dimes at the 9th Annual Bikers for Babies®.  Riders gathered at Nickerson Beach in Lido Beach and hit the road to support the March of Dimes and help moms have full-term pregnancies and babies begin healthy lives.

Premature birth is the most serious infant health problem in the United States today.  It affects more than half a million babies each year nationwide and over 31,000 right here in New York State.  Babies born too soon are more likely to die or have lifelong disabilities.  Over $47,000 was raised by Bikers for Babies on Long Island help support prenatal wellness programs, research grants, advocacy efforts and a Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Family Support® program at Stony Brook University Medical Center, all for stronger, healthier babies.

“Seeing the riders set out together in support of the smallest members of our community is always an incredible sight.  It doesn’t get any better than to be outside on the open road and hear the roar of the bikes, all for a great cause,” said Snider.  “As the father of four, two of my children were born premature, and now, with your involvement and my big mouth, we will do something great and help ensure that all babies are born full-term and healthy!”

After the ride, bikers were treated to live music, a bike show, and a showcase with biker-related vendors. This year’s Bikers for Babies was made possible by local supporters and sponsors, including Motorcycle Mike, Esq., Custom Catering, Garden City Pizza, Full Throttle Magazine, Guardians of the Children, Cavalier & Associates P.C., WBAB/WBLI Radio, Creative Motion Pictures, Steamboat Marketing and Webvantage.

The most urgent infant health problem in the U.S. today is premature birth.  It affects more than half a million babies each year, with the number growing every day.  The March of Dimes is committed to reducing this toll by funding research to find the answers to problems that continue to threaten the health of babies.
