Man Seriously Injured While Fleeing Police in Moped; Charged with DWI

A man was seriously injured after police tried to pull him over while he was riding a moped erratically.

According to Suffolk County Police, officers attempted to pull over Juan Santoro, 34, who was riding a moped erratically on Larkfield Road at approximately 5:50 p.m. in East Northport. Santoro refused to pull over and two police cars continued to follow him, traveling around 30 mph, until he hit one of the cars, ejected from the moped and struck a utility pole. He was transported via police helicopter to Stony Brook University Medical Center in critical condition.

Both the moped and the police cruiser were impounded for a safety check.

Santoro was charged with Driving While Intoxicated, Reckless Driving and issued numerous traffic citations but currently, an arraignment has not been scheduled.
