Northern California was struck by a 3.6 magnitude quake today.
Early Thursday, a quake struck the east bay city of Berkeley. The quake struck at a depth of around 6 miles. It was centered on the campus of University of California Berkeley.
It follows a 4.8 magnitude earthquake that struck northern California Wednesday, according to the USGS.
The quake struck at 11:37 p.m. local time. It struck 9 miles outside of Whitehawk, California and 35 miles outside of Reno, NV.
Last week, the San Francisco area was hit with two earthquakes. The quakes struck the same day as California’s annual earthquake preparedness drill took place.
As we previously reported, earlier in the day more than 8.5 million people in California signed up to participate in the annual earthquake preparedness drill.
A 4.0 quake struck six miles beneath the University of California, Berkeley campus and six hours later, a 3.8 aftershock struck along the same fault line.
The California quakes are minor compared to a quake that struck Turkey earlier this week. Sunday, a powerful 7.2 magnitude earthquake rocked eastern Turkey, injuring hundreds and leaving over 530, dead.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake struck nearly 10 miles from Van shortly after 1:30 p.m. local time. The magnitude was originally reported as 7.3 but later changed to 7.2. The quake had a depth of 12.4 miles.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the brave men and women who are working to bring assistance to this stricken region,” U.S. President Barack Obama said in a statement. “We stand shoulder to shoulder with our Turkish ally at this difficult time, and are ready to assist the Turkish authorities.”
According to CNN, the main quake was followed by several aftershocks, including a magnitude 5.8. Though Sunday’s earthquake was considered large, earthquakes are frequent in Turkey, which is crossed by fault lines.
