Google has been known to create some flashy Google Doodle’s to celebrate holidays, anniversaries and other important events.
On Friday, the doodlers at Google went classy, and left out the flash, creating a doodle for Veterans Day in honor of America’s service men and women, on 11-11-11.
The simple doodle displays a tree on a hill with a yellow ribbon wrapped around the trunk as it blows in the wind. Behind the tree is a blue sky with Google’s letters spelled out in white.
Point the mouse over the image and “Veterans Day 2011” appears. Click on it and it directs users to a Veterans Day search.
Americans across the nation are celebrating the day in many different ways. On Long Island, there’s handful of events planned to honor those who fought for the country.
At 11 a.m. in Washington D.C., President Obama observed Veterans Day by participating in a wreath laying ceremony at the Tomb of Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery.
Obama said in a Presidential Proclamation: “Today, our Nation comes together to honor our veterans and commemorate the legacy of profound service and sacrifice they have upheld in pursuit of a more perfect Union. Through their steadfast defense of America’s ideals, our service members have ensured our country still stands strong, our founding principles still shine, and nations around the world know the blessings of freedom.
“As we offer our sincere appreciation and respect to our veterans, to their families, to those who are still in harm’s way, and to those we have laid to rest, let us rededicate ourselves to serving them as well as they have served the United States of America.”
