OBCA Forum on Poverty

The Oyster Bay Civic Association features a panel speaking on Hunger and Poverty in Oyster Bay, at 7:30 p.m. at the Italian-American Club, 48 Summit Street. All attendees are urged to bring some non-perishable foods for distribution by the North Shore Community Church food pantry for our needy neighbors.

Victorian Fair  

Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the First Presbyterian Church presents its annual Victorian Fair featuring antiques, collectibles, attic treasures, jewelry, holiday decorations, snacks, pictures with Santa, lunch cafe, and baked goods. Located at 60 East Main Street, Friday- 5 P.M. to 8 P.M.; Saturday- 10 A.M. to 4 P.M.; Sunday- 11:30 A.M. to 2 P.M.

Annual Gala and Dinner

Join the Colette Coyne Melanoma Awareness Campaign in its efforts to Prevent Melanoma – Skin Cancer on Nov. 19 at The Cottage at The Milleridge Inn, 585 North Broadway, Jericho, from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. The organization works toward education and prevention, visiting schools and sport tournaments, fairs, large venues and skin screenings. Melanoma is the most common form of cancer in young adults 25-29 and the second most common for ages 15-29. Honorees are Dr. Jennifer DeFazio of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and Donald Gleason, Melanoma survivor and advocate. Tickets: $100 per person; table of 10 $900. “In Memory/Honor of…” signage available. Join the event in the “Be Sun Smart” initiative. Monday, November 21

Gardening Workshop

The Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary & Audubon Center will be hosting a workshop called Audubon at Home and Work! Creating Sustainable Landscapes and Organic Gardens. The workshop will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Cold Spring Harbor Library and Environmental Center, 95 Harbor Rd., Cold Spring Harbor. Registration is required by calling 922-3200 or e-mailing trsac@audubon.org. Be one of the first 25 registrants and receive a free gift. Presentations are planned all day focusing on the Audubon at Home principals of low maintenance, chemical free, wildlife attractive, native green spaces. Participants will learn how to create sustainable landscapes and organic gardens and be able to take the principals and materials back with them to create wonderful green spaces at their homes or workplaces. Speakers include Vincent Simeone, Betsy Gullotta and Regina Dlugokencky. Cost: $35 per person, includes all program materials, books, lunch, and prizes.

Holiday Sharing Program

Nonperishable food items and turkeys will be accepted at the C.S.A.C. Food Drive, located at the First Presbyterian Church on East Main Street in Oyster Bay, on Monday, Nov. 21, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 6 p.m., and Tuesday, Nov. 22, between the hours of 9 a.m. and noon. America’s Poets Walk With Walt

The program, which will be held at the birthplace of America’s Good Gray Poet at 246 Old Walt Whitman Rd., Huntington Station, will be hosted by Whitman Birthplace Writer in Residence George Wallace. The program will pair a nationally prominent visiting writer with one of Long Island’s fine regional poets for a program of poetry and conversation. Individual tickets to the series will be on sale in advance, or at the door, for $15 per ticket or $70 for the full series. Light Up the Holidays

This OB-EN Chamber of Commerce fundraiser is aimed at lighting the snowflakes and paying the electric bill it generates as they brighten the entire town. Tickets are $75 for the dinner at Luce Restaurant in East Norwich. Call 922-6464 for donations, information and reservations.


Ongoing Event

Muttontown Unitarian Universalist Fellowship

The Fellowship provides an atmosphere of warmth and comraderie, with talks presented by intelligent enlightening and non-dogmatic speakers who come from the entire spectrum of the Arts, History and Sciences. This is followed by coffee and an informal discussion circle, held in the turn-of-the-18th century farmhouse in a bucolic setting. Sundays at 10:30 a.m. The Muttontown Unitarian Universalist Fellowship is located on the south side of Route 25A (Northern Blvd.), East Norwich, directly east of Martin Viette Nurseries and about a half mile west of Route 106. Weekly Events

•Alcoholics Anonymous closed step meeting Sundays at 8 p.m. and open meeting at the same time. On Wednesdays at 8 p.m. there is a beginner’s meeting and a closed discussion meeting. Any one can attend the open meetings. The closed meetings are for anyone who has a desire to stop drinking. The meetings are held at Christ Church, 61 E. Main St. For information call 922-6377.

•Young at Heart Parkinson’s Support Group meeting from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on the fourth Sunday of the month in the cafeteria on the ground level, near the emergency room at North Shore University Hospital at Syosset, 221 Jericho Tpke. •Meet the Doctors. Focusing on education, Premiere OBGYN will sponsor a Meet the Doctors program on the first Tuesday of each month from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at 79 Froelich Farm Blvd., Woodbury. Women who are planning a pregnancy or are already expecting can join Drs. Prince, Brooks and Flynn and have their questions answered on conception and a safe pregnancy.

•Alzheimer’s Support Group. Are you a caregiver who would like to share your experience with others? There is strength in knowing you are not alone. Join this support group at 7 p.m. on the third Tuesday of the month in the Adult Day Health Care Program Room at the Cold Spring Hills Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation, 378 Syosset-Woodbury Rd., Woodbury. •Syosset Day Chapter/Homemakers Council of NC holds its business meetings the first Wednesday of the month (September through June) at 10:15 a.m. Classes are held on subsequent Wednesdays at 10 a.m. The Homemakers meet at St. Bede’s Episcopal Church, Berry Hill Rd., Syosset. All are welcome to join.

•Bereaved Parents of the USA. This national self-help support group charters the LI NY Chapter. Meetings will be held on the second Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, 231 Jackson Ave., Syosset. The group offers support, compassion, understanding and hope. No dues or fees.

•Locust Valley Garden Club. The Executive Board of the Locust Valley Garden Club invites new members to join. The club meets on the second Wednesday of the month at 10 a.m. at Bailey Arboretum. Some of the committees take care of local gardens, do garden therapy with residents of Jones Manor, make projects with the children of the Grenville Boys and Girls Club and decorate local libraries at holiday time. Anyone interested from surrounding towns is welcome to join. Upcoming programs include: garden video, holiday arrangements, sustainable landscapes and terrariums.

•Getting Acquainted with Social Security. The Incorporated Village of Bayville is sponsoring a service for its retired residents as well as those who are considering retirement. Social Security: Getting Acquainted with Social Security Services will be conducted by Village of Bayville resident, Vincent Serio, a recently retired Social Security Administration agent with many years of experience in the field of Social Security services. He will discuss retirement, disability, survivor and Medicare benefits, in addition to the development and adjudication of the new prescription plan. There will be a question and answer period during which attendees will be given the opportunity to discuss concerns and get clarification on all aspects of Social Security. There is no fee for this service, which will be provided on an ongoing basis the first Thursday of the month at the Bayville Community Center, 88 Bayville Ave. Call 628-1439.

•LI Tourette Syndrome Association Support groups for those who have family members or other loved ones with Tourette Syndrome meet from 7:30 to 9 p.m. on the first Friday of each month at the DeMatteis Center, north side of Northern Blvd., Old Brookville (directly opposite the NY Institute of Technology campus). There are three separate support groups running simultaneously: one group for children, one for teens and one for parents/adults. Siblings of TS children are also invited. Free for LI-TSA members.
