The Minnesota Vikings released Donovan McNabb on Thursday and the quaterback may now find himself on the roster of one of the remaining playoff contending teams struggling at that position.
The move was described as a mutual decision by Vikings coach Leslie Frazier, who also added that it was the best move for both parties.
“He was and has been a great player for our league for a long, long time. I have a lot of affection and love for Donovan,” Frazier said, according to Vikings team website. “A tremendous person and a tremendous competitor, and we really wish him nothing but the best in his future endeavors. He did a good job for us here. He really helped our young quarterbacks. He did a good job in a lot of ways.”
He didn’t go as far as to say if McNabb can still help another team, however. But with a thin quarterback market, and some playoff contending teams (Chicago Bears, Houston Texans) hampered by injuries, McNabb might have another chance of reaching the playoffs.
The 35-year-old quarterback can be claimed off waivers, and some are speculating that the Chicago Bears, his hometown team, may go after him. The Bears may have lost QB Jay Cutler for the remainder of the season to a thumb injury and are stuck with backup quarterback Caleb Hanie who threw two touchdowns and three interceptions last week in the Bears’ loss to Oakland.
McNabb is currently in his 13th season in the NFL, and after spending 11 years in a Philadelphia, he may find himself on his third team in two years.
He was traded from Washington to Minnesota before the season and played in six games. The Vikings only won one game in his six starts, and McNabb threw four touchdowns and two interceptions.
