Country singer Mindy McCready and her five-year-old son were found in Arkansas after police discovered the mother and son hiding in a closet Friday night, U.S. Marshalls and police said, according to reports.

McCready’s son, Zander, was taken into custody and officials told the Associated Press that they were working to return the five-year-old to his grandmother, who is also the boy’s legal guardian.

“The child appeared to be in good condition when we found him…he was in the closet with his mother,” David Rahbany, the chief deputy U.S. Marshal in eastern Arkansas told CNN.

According to reports, it was believed that the house where the mother and son were discovered belongs to McCready’s boyfriend.

“I’m real excited that he’s safe,” McCready’s mother told the AP. “But I can’t explain what this is like. We feel for Mindy and we feel for Zander.”

The singer took her son from her grandmother’s Florida home last month and hoped that court would give her custody of her son because she was concerned for his safety, according to reports.

She was not charged with a crime after the discovery, officials said.

In an email to the Associated Press during the week she defended her actions, saying she was protecting her son, despite violating the custody agreement. “I don’t think I should be in trouble for protecting my son in the first place,” she said in an email to the AP.

McCready also said on Wednesday that she was in Tennessee, but couldn’t travel because she is pregnant with twins.
