The daughter of former New York Mets great Gary Carter revealed in her online journal on Thursday that her father’s health has taken a turn for the worse.
In the journal she wrote that Carter’s doctor “told my mom that there are now several new spots/tumors on my dad’s brain.”
“I write these words with tears because I am so sad for my dad,” she said.
Carter’s doctor was scheduled to meet with the family Thursday night “to talk to the family about the next step,” Carter’s daughter said, adding that she will continue to update everyone about her father’s health.
She began the journal post saying the past week “has been one of the hardest weeks for my dad.”
On Thursday, Carter, also a former manager of the Long Island Ducks, went for a follow up appointment and fell in the hallway while he was leaving, and required medical assistance. That fall followed up a fall Carter had on Christmas Eve, and the MRI revealed that he completely tore his rotator cuff, his daughter said.
“It is very painful and needs surgery,” she wrote, “but all dad can do right now is rehab to heal.”
Carter also had an MRI on his brain while he was in North Palm Beach, Florida, and the results were sent to Duke University for evaluation.
Carter’s diagnosis was revealed last summer when he released a statement through the Mets saying doctors found “very small tumors” on his brain.
Over his 19-year career Carter batted .262 with 324 homers and 1,225 RBIs. The 11-time All-Star was inducted into the baseball Hall of Fame in 2003. He appeared in eight straight All-Star games from 1981-1988.
Carter also won three Gold Glove awards over his career.
He is also a member of the Mets 1986 World Series team. During the season he batted .255 with 24 home runs and 105 RBIs.
He played for the Montreal Expos, New York Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants from 1974-1992. Carter played his final game with the Expos.
After the 2009 season Carter left the Long Island Ducks to be closer to home.
