Winter Concert at Waldorf School
Performances by MAGC Select Ensembles, along with solo performances and music by MAGC faculty members, including the newest teachers, saxophonist Benny Reid and guitarist Andrew Baird. The ensembles, which are made up entirely of Music Academy students, have worked hard preparing music. The performance will feature works from many different artists. 5 p.m. in Bonner Hall, Waldorf School, 225 Cambridge Ave., Garden City. Tickets $40 adults; $35 children.

A Ride on The Underground Railroad
The vocal talents of students, both from Hofstra and Hempstead High School, will combine with that of professional singers and noted musicians in a production titled A Ride on The Underground Railroad. The performance features music from an original opera, Songs of Harriet Tubman by Hofstra Music Professor Nkeiru Okoye (of Massapequa), as well as world premieres and familiar works also centered around themes of freedom and courage. Also featured are spirituals performed by the Hofstra University Chamber Choir with students from the Hempstead High School Select Chorale; members of the Hofstra University Orchestra; tenor Robert Anthony Mack; contralto Nicole Mitchell; soprano Diana Solomon-Glover. This concert, presented by Hofstra Entertainment and the Joseph G. Astman International Concert Series in honor of African American History Month, will be performed at 3 p.m. at the John Cranford Adams Playhouse, Hofstra University, Hempstead. Tickets are $15; $12 senior citizens (over 65 with ID); $5 matriculated non-Hofstra students with ID. Hofstra University students may receive one free ticket upon presentation of current HofstraCard. Hofstra CE’s Writers Salon takes place at 7 p.m. and will focus on “Personal Stories as Narrative.” In this stimulating presentation, Jamie Talan, a science and medical writer, will discuss narrative writing and will present an exercise in which participants use personal stories to create their own narratives. Jamie Talan has been writing about science and medicine for over 30 years, the first 25 as a reporter for Newsday. Ethiopian Prayer Scrolls: Visual Medicine
Presented by the Nassau Community College Center for Arts and Humanities. Given by Dr. Laura Lombard, assistant manager of University Programs and Partnerships at the Rubin Museum of Art, the presentation will take place at 11:30 a.m. in Room C-65 of Building G. Ethiopian prayer scrolls are used in an indigenous healing art practiced in Africa by Ethiopian faith healers. Inscribed with elaborate visual symbols and prayers, the scrolls are measured to the height of a sick person to provide a “body-double.” During exorcism, it is believed that evil spirits fly from the patient to the scroll, where they are captured in the symbolic nets. Dr. Lombard’s talk will explore the ancient land and customs that gave rise to the scrolls, as well as the worldview of Christian faith healers who make them in order to treat physical and psychological illness. Charles Darwin’s Birthday Celebration
The Ethical Humanist Society of LI, 38 Old Country Rd., Garden City, is celebrating science in conjunction with Darwin’s birthday. One presentation “How Science Works?” by Dr. Victor Schuster is an interactive representation and discussion on how the scientific method works. The second presentations are “Astronomy and the Night Sky” and “Meteorite/Meteor Wrong: How do you know a rock is a Meteor?” Linda Prince and the Amateur Observer’s Society will present hands-on and visual representations of phenomenon in space. Children will display their science projects showing their various investigations and interests. Arts and crafts will be available all day, including a graffiti wall. Jeffrey Biegel in Concert
The South Shore Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Music Director Scott Jackson Wiley, will be performing at Molloy College Madison Theatre in Rockville Centre at 8 p.m. The program features Aaron Copland’s Applachian Spring, Saint Saens Piano Concerto no. 2 in G Op. 22 featuring pianist Jeffrey Biegel and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4. Jeffrey Biegel is one of today’s most respected artists, having created a multi-faceted career as a pianist, recording artist, composer and arranger. His electrifying technique and mesmerizing touch has received critical acclaim worldwide. Black History Month Programs
The Nassau Community College Black History Month Committee will present a month of programs and events in tribute to African American achievements in America. • Through Feb. 5: Blues for an Alabama Sky. In Pearl Cleage’s play, creative artists, writers and luminaries bask in the glory and the hope of the Harlem Renaissance “for a red hot minute.” Then comes the Great Depression and harsher realities set in. This play is a joint production of the NCC Theatre and Dance Department and the Africana Studies Department. • Feb. 7: Touré – As a correspondent for NBC, host of Fuse TV’s The Hip Hop Show and On the Record, and a contributing editor to Rolling Stone, Touré is one of today’s most important cultural commentators. •Group 1: A woman’s bereavement group is available to help women share and learn about their grief. Groups are held on a weekly basis and are facilitated by a licensed clinical social worker.

Cradle of Aviation Museum
In the world of aviation, signals and coded messages are an important part of how airplanes and air traffic control speak everyday. The Cradle of Aviation Museum has a variety of free family activities. Walk through the eight museum galleries and you’ll walk through over 100 years of aerospace history with 75 planes and space craft and a variety of examples of how pilots navigated and communicated from the early days of flight through the space program. Museum activities are free with admission and are available each day from noon to 4 p.m. The museum also is home to the IMAX Dome Theatre and is located on Charles Lindbergh Blvd., Museum Row. NC Coalition Against Domestic Violence
The Coalition is a member agency of the Garden City Community Fund, United Community Fund of Great Neck, Community Chest of Port Washington and United Way of LI. Call 222-2293 for information the following:
•Support groups with individual counseling for incest survivors and survivors of rape and sexual assault. Services are confidential and free of charge. These services are also extended to family members and partners of survivors.
•The coalition operates a safe home for battered women and their children. The Coalition’s Safe Home for Abused Families provides shelter, advocacy and legal assistance, in a safe, warm, supportive, attractive environment. Call the 24-hour hotline 542-0404. •If you are 60 or older and suffering from abuse, mistreatment or neglect at the hands of family members or someone who is living with you, help is available. Epilepsy Foundation

•Free Puppet Show on Seizure Disorder. A free children’s program on epilepsy using the internationally acclaimed “Kids on the Block” troupe of puppets to public and private elementary schools. Exhibit
The Nassau Community College Firehouse Plaza Art Gallery presents the exhibit “Corporal Edges” featuring the drawings and paintings of artist Nadege Monchera-Baer. The exhibition can be viewed through March 1. Nadege Monchera-Baer was born in Valenciennes, France, and currently works from her art studio in Los Angeles. Her experiences working with Italian film director Federico Fellini, as well as her time in several creative industries in Berlin, Paris, Rome and New York had a profound influence on her growth as an artist.
