The Super Bowl kicked off Sunday evening with an amazing halftime show from Madonna.
Madonna graced the crowds with classics like “Like A Prayer,” and “Vogue” along with new songs like “Give Me All Your Luvin.” She also invited other stars to share the stage with her and help wow the crowd with her Super Bowl performance.
Unfortunately, The Material Girl was upstaged by one of her guests. And no, it wasn’t Cee Lo Green’s sequin black coat nor his amazing voice when he helped Madge belt out “Like A Prayer.”
Instead it was English rapper, M.I.A. While most eyes stayed locked on Madge, those eyes that strayed, caught rapper M.I.A. suffering a finger malfunction.
It all happened while M.I.A., Madge and Nicki Minaj performed the newly released song “Give Me All Your Luvin.” The cameras focused on M.I.A. as she sang her verse:
“It’s super sonic, bionic, uranium hit so I break ’em off tricks, Let’s pray that it sticks, I’mma say this once, yeah, I don’t give a sh-t.”
As she finished her verse, she turned around and fliped the camera the bird for all the world to see and if that wasn’t enough, she also uttered an expletive.
This follows a similar yet not so similar Super Bowl halftime show incident in which singer Janet Jackson suffered a controversial wardrobe malfunction that revealed her breast.
The NFL has handpicked performers since Janet Jackson’s mishap, ensuring that the wide range of viewers wouldn’t get another controversial performance.
The Parents Television Council came down hard on the NFL and NBC regarding Sunday’s incident. They released a statement saying, “It is unfortunate that a spectacular sporting event was overshadowed once again by broadcasting the selfish acts of a desperate performer,” TMZ reported.
The NFL blamed NBC for a delay in the system that allowed the incident to be aired. A NBC spokesman commented on the M.I.A finger-flipping saying, “The obscene gesture in the performance was completely inappropriate, very disappointing, and we apologize to our fans.”
“The NFL hired the talent and produced the halftime show,” NBC spokesman Christopher McCloskey said, reported ABC. “Our system was late to obscure the inappropriate gesture and we apologize to our viewers.”
