Dr. Gregory House will no longer be solving mystery cases after the 8th season of the popular drama House ends this year.

The network announced on Thursday that House will conclude after this season.

“The decision to end the show now, or ever, is a painful one, as it risks putting asunder hundreds of close friendships that have developed over the last eight years—but also because the show itself has been a source of great pride to everyone involved,” producers of Fox’s hit show and Hugh Laurie said in a joint statement.

The long-running hospital drama has been a success for Fox since its premiere in 2004.

There have been rumors that another network might look to acquire the show, led by Laurie, who plays Dr. Gregory House, a man who has been able to conquer the world’s biggest medical mysteries but is unable to maintain friendships and comes off as a rude and insensitive medical professional.

Because House is produced by Universal Television it has been suggested that NBC would consider picking up the show once Fox decided to say goodbye to the popular drama. But according to Entertainment Weekly, that route doesn’t seem likely.

Prior to this season the show lost Lisa Edelstein (Dr. Lisa Cuddy), when she decided not to return after her contract ended last year.

“The producers have always imagined House as an enigmatic creature;” the statement read, “he should never be the last one to leave the party. How much better to disappear before the music stops, while there is still some promise and mystique in the air.”

Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly said in a statement: “For eight seasons, the entire House team has given us – and fans around the world – some of the most compelling characters and affecting stories ever seen on television. They have been creatively tenacious and collaborative throughout this incredible run, and they are amongst the most superior talents in the business. For all the above, we wholeheartedly thank them, and the fans who have supported the show.”
