Actually, The Vow was safe from Denzel Washington’s latest film Safe House, which earned second place at the box office on Friday, falling just behind director Michael Sucsy’s romantic drama, which came out just in time for Valentine’s Day.
Both had enough to withstand the power of the Jedi, with George Lucas’ Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace making its 3D debut. But the prequel to Star Wars was only good enough for third place on the day, according to estimates from the box office tracking website Box Office Mojo.
The return of Star Wars to movie theaters brought out the empire’s passionate fan base, which couldn’t wait for another opportunity to check out Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor), Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson), Queen Amidala (Natalie Portman), and of course, Jar Jar Binks, more than a decade after its original debut.
The Vow, starring Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum took the No. 1 spot on its opening day with $15.3 million. Safe House brought in $13.8 million.
Starring alongside Washington, who plays a dangerous renegade from the CIA, is Ryan Reynolds, Vera Farmiga and Brendan Gleeson.
The Vow is a romantic drama that features a newlywed couple who get into a car accident that puts the wife into a coma. McAdams’ character, Paige, suffers memory loss and Tatum, as Leo, fights to get her to love him again.
Also debuting on Friday was Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, which brought in $6.5 million, good for fourth place on Friday.
Chronicle, about a group of high school students that develop unique powers, finished at No. 5 with just over $3 million.
