Military Bridge at Christ Lutheran

Birthday in a Bag Drive at Long Island Children’s Museum

Remember the excitement of making a wish as you blew out your birthday candles? Remember the sparkle it brought to your parents eyes? Now it’s your turn to help make those same special memories for children whose parents have to struggle with the dilemma of providing food or having a birthday party. In honor of LICM’s 10th “Birthday on the Block,” we’re partnering with Long Island Cares, Inc. – The Harry Chapin Food Bank to help gather birthday party items for families in need. Again on Feb. 26. Here are some suggestions:  candles, cake mix & frosting, party hats, goodie bags and party favors, balloons, gift wrap, disposable cake pans, paper goods. Be sure to put all the items in a fun birthday bag! Items must be new. All kid friendly foods are welcomed as well. The LICM will be collecting the items from February 18-26 in the outer lobby of the museum, 11 Davis Avenue, Garden City.

Temple Emanuel of Great Neck to present Courting The Jester

On February 19 at 3 p.m., Temple Emanuel of Great Neck will present “Courting the Jester,” Robert Spiotto’s Musical Tribute to Danny Kaye. Multitalented Bob Spiotto sings and dances in a nonstop overview of Kaye’s life, told with energy and humor. Come and see him in this 90-minute tour-de-farce with musical direction and accompaniment by Peter A. Pece. Tickets are $10/Adult with discounts for students and seniors. The price of admission includes a “Meet the Artist” dessert reception that follows the show. Temple Emanuel of Great Neck is located at 150 Hicks Lane. Little Red Riding Hood at LICM

WonderSpark Puppets presents Little Red Riding Hood on  February 19 and February 20 at 1 and 3 p.m. Appearing for the first time at LICM, WonderSpark Puppets infuses fun and whimsy into all their performances. Join them for a fun show based on a familiar childhood fairy tale. Little Red is sent into the big woods to deliver a basket of goodies to her sick grandmother, but is hounded by a hungry wolf who wants the basket for himself. Will Little Red be able to outsmart the wolf and save her grandmother?  Ages: 3 and up. Fee: $6 with museum admission, $4 LICM members, $10 theater only.

President’s Day to Celebrate Washington/ Lincoln’s Birthday

Most schools will be closed for President’s Day and most schools will be closed for the entire week for vacation. The day itself is also a federal holiday and most banks and post offices will be closed.

Tin for Ten at LICM to Celebrate 10th Anniversary

On February 20 through February 24 from 1-4 p.m., the traditional 10th anniversary gift is tin or aluminum. Join LICM celebrate our 10th year on Museum Row by helping us build the ultimate tin trophy. Add to the artwork as we build a collaborative sculpture using an exciting array of tin, aluminum and other shiny materials. Ages: 3 and up. Free with museum admission.

Irish American Society Grand Marshal and Aides Dinner Dance

The Irish American Society of Nassau, Suffolk and Queens, Inc. will hold a Grand Marshal and Aides Dinner Dance at 297 Willis Avenue, Mineola to begin at 5 p.m. Grand Marshal Betty McLoughlin, along with aides Mary Coyne, Jeff Clark, Aileen Scott and Sean Treanor, will be honored. Featured will be music by Billy Keenan and the Prime Time Showband. Menu will feature:  Corned beef and ham, potatoes, cabbage, turnips, coffee, tea, soda bread. Open bar. Dinner 5 to 6 p.m. and dancing from 6 to 10 p.m. Presentation of sashes. Master of ceremonies, Tony Jackson. Patrick Kerins, president, Patrick Kerins, parade chairman, Dave Stuart, co-chairman. Robinson Hour Concert Series Presents Allison Lander, Pianist

TNH Hosts Annual Polar Plunge to Benefit Special Olympics

Supervisor Jon Kaiman and the North Hempstead Town Board invite all residents to join the hundreds of other brave souls who will dive into the frigid waters at North Hempstead Beach Park for 8th annual Polar Plunge. Sponsored by the Special Olympics, the “Freezin’ for a Reason” Polar Plunge will be held at North Hempstead Beach Park on March 3rd. Registration will be from 10 to 11:30 a.m., and the Plunge will start at noon.

“Besides being a great event to socialize with family, friends and neighbors and engage in friendly and fun rivalry, the Annual Polar Plunge gives everyone the opportunity to raise funds for a worthy cause,” Supervisor Jon Kaiman said. “I look forward to seeing you there.”

In addition to Supervisor Kaiman, plungers will also include State Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel, Special Olympics athletes, students from local universities and high schools, as well as members of the community.
