Elizabeth Smart exchanged vows with her foreign fiance this past weekend.

Smart became Mrs. Gilmour in a private wedding ceremony in Hawaii Saturday.

The 24-year-old and Scotland native Gilmour, 22, became engaged just last month and originally planned to have a summer wedding. In a surprising move, the couple moved the date up after intense media attention in order to keep the ceremony private.

“Elizabeth’s desire was for what most women want — to celebrate her nuptials in a private wedding with family and close friends,” family spokesman Chris Thomas said in a statement. “She decided, about a week ago, the best way to avoid significant distraction was to change her wedding plans and to get married in an unscheduled ceremony outside of Utah.”

Smart married Gilmour at the Laie Hawaii Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with a private reception and luau following the ceremony.

The Associated Press reported that Thomas said, “The bride and groom were beaming as they left the LDS Temple.”

Smart spoke on the event to PEOPLE magazine, saying, “It’s everything you can imagine with planning a wedding,” and “Only, it’s compressed into a few days.”

The two met in Paris while they were doing Mormon mission work and had been dating for a year.

Smart captured the public’s attention in 2002, when she was kidnapped at knifepoint at 14 years old and held captive for nine months.

Her kidnapping was covered by media and the search for her was extensive, according to Reuters, though Smart was finally spotted by passers-by in Salt Lake City in 2003.

Street preacher Brian David Mitchell was convicted in 2010 of kidnapping and is currently serving a life sentence in prison. His wife, Wanda Barzee, is serving a 15-year prison term after she pled guilty to conspiracy.
