Larry “The Duck” attends celebration
WPOB 88.5 FM, Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy (POBJFK) High School’s radio station, celebrated 40 years of broadcasting as one of only four high school radio stations on Long Island on Friday, Feb. 10. The anniversary celebration included several well-known speakers in the broadcasting field, many of whom had begun their careers at WPOB.
Past, current, and future broadcasters gathered together at the school’s auditorium with over 400 POBJFK High School students to pay tribute to the groundbreaking and distinguished radio program that has given students a head start in the broadcasting industry for generations.
“We have to thank the district for the innovation and vision that they showed when they started this station 40 years ago,” said Adam Weinstock, who teaches radio fundamentals, production and broadcasting classes at POBJFK and serves as the station’s faculty advisor. “WPOB gives Plainview students who are interested in broadcasting a huge advantage in the industry by providing vital hands-on experience that is unavailable to most of their peers.”
Speakers at the celebration included Hoodie Allen, an up-and-coming rap artist who graduated from POBJFK High School, Shawn Novatt and DJ Skye of WBLI, Brad Klein of NASCAR Channel, Scotty B, a Z100 radio personality and POBJFK graduate, Larry the Duck, broadcasting legend and Newsday contributor, and Norm Prusslin, from the Intercollegiate Broadcasting Service. The event was sponsored by Coliseum Caterers and Catch a Wave Yogurt.
