So why isn’t John Wall in the NBA dunk contest on Saturday night?
Unless there’s any out-of-this-world breathtaking dunks during the contest, the NBA might want to reward the speedy point guard out of Washington with the championship.
During the 2012 NBA Rising Stars Challenge, Wall, who was 12th man to be picked for the game by Shaquille O’Neal and Charles Barkley, decided to show off his dunking skills with the game all but over.
Wall’s incredible dunk came in the fourth quarter with his team already up double-digits. With the defense lagging behind him, Wall ran to the basket jumped, wrapped the basketball around his back, and then dunked it home.
“He needs to be in the dunk contest,” opined TNT broadcaster Kenny Smith. “Stop it. Stop playing man.”
Some others might agree with that statement, especially considering the lack of high-profile names in the dunk contest this year (Derrick Williams, Paul George, Jeremy Evans and Chase Budinger).
It wasn’t the first time Wall attempted the spectacular dunk, however. He said after the game that he tried it once before during the Chris Paul All-Star game, according to NBC Sports.
“I just wanted to try it again, and luckily I made it. It was only my third time ever doing it, so I was shocked.”
Wall, the first pick in the NBA draft two years ago, came off the bench to score 17 points and dish out eight assists. Wall, and everybody else, however, was trumped by Kyrie Irving who dropped 34 points on 12-for-13 shooting. He also had nine assists.
