Garden City Police Department Solves Burglary and Thefts
Based upon excellent detective work using DNA technology, Garden City Police detectives have been able to solve a burglary and numerous thefts from parked automobiles. On Feb. 12, Garden City detectives arrested a 34-year-old Brooklyn man for 29 thefts that occurred during the past five months within the Village. An alert police detective found evidence at the scene of one of the vehicle thefts, which DNA lab testing confirmed belonged to the subject. The detectives located the subject in Brooklyn and placed him under arrest. The subject was previously arrested by Garden City Police in 2010 for a theft from a vehicle on Arthur Street. Numerous other cases have been closed by this arrest and an investigation is ongoing to determine if the subject arrested was responsible for other similar vehicle larcenies committed within the village and in other communities within Nassau County.
In the other arrest, Garden City Police believe that they have solved a burglary which took place on July 24 in the laundry room of a Hamilton Place apartment complex. Once again, an alert Garden City Detective located trace blood evidence indicating that the suspect had cut himself during the crime. The crime scene was secured and the DNA test results confirmed that this crime was committed by a 47-year-old Jericho man. It was determined that the subject was staying at a local hotel where he was located and placed under arrest. The investigation is continuing regarding a possible connection between this arrest and other burglaries committed in Garden City and in other communities within Nassau County.
Village Election – Tuesday, March 20
The annual village election will be held on Tuesday, March 20, from noon until 9 p.m. at Village Hall, 351 Stewart Ave. Village residents will be voting for the following candidates:
John J. Watras, Trustee – two-year term
Nicholas P. Episcopia, Trustee – two-year term
Andrew J. Cavanaugh, Trustee – two-year term
Brian C. Daughney, Trustee – two-year term
Since the incorporation of the village in 1919, members of the Board of Trustees in Garden City have been elected by a non-partisan vote of residents in accordance with the policies of the Community Agreement.
Absentee Ballot Applications
Absentee Ballot applications to be used in conjunction with the general village election on March 20, 2012, are available at the Village Hall, 351 Stewart Ave. Applications must be received by the village clerk by March 13 if the ballot is to be mailed. For personal application, the deadline is March 19.
Board of Trustees Meeting Schedule
The next regularly scheduled board of trustees meetings will be held on Thursday, March 1 and Thursday, March 15, at 8 p.m.

These sessions are currently scheduled to be held in the boardroom at Village Hall, 351 Stewart Ave., Garden City. All residents are welcome and encouraged to attend.
St. Patrick’s Day Parade – March 4 – New Route
This year the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade, organized by the Irish-American Society of Nassau, Suffolk and Queens, Inc., will be held in Mineola on Sunday, March 4.
The parade will assemble at noon on Courthouse Drive (in front of the Irish Monument), near the County Courthouse. The parade will then proceed to Old Country Road, left onto Old Country Road and turning right onto Mineola Boulevard proceeding down Jericho Turnpike. This year the reviewing stand will be located on the south side of Jericho Turnpike between Mineola Boulevard and Willis Avenue in Mineola.
