HHS, Holy Trinity grads thank community for support
Four Hicksville runners, with the help of friends, family and the local community, recently raised more than $16,000 to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
Holy Trinity grad Alexis Tobin and Hicksville High School alums Meagan Doyle, Kerri O’Connor and Keira McCarthy organized several fundraising events in the area before running 13.1 miles at Walt Disney World on Jan. 7 for Team in Training (TNT), a Leukemia & Lymphoma Society program that helps athletes train and raise money for blood cancer.
“Kerry’s father passed from lymphoma and that’s why she was doing this, in memory of her dad. My dad has leukemia … so it’s near and dear to my heart,” said Tobin, who called her half marathon with Team Doc the best experience of her life.
“We started training for it in September. We did a Zumba event, we had a bar party at Crossroads and at Sideline Grill we hosted a bar night. We made over $500 in additional donations from people we didn’t even know, which was really cool,” said Tobin.
After the Disney half marathon, Tobin said members of the team decided to “just keep running and raising” as she, Kerri and their newest Team Doc member, Jaclyn Sturtevant, plan on participating in the upcoming Long Island and San Diego half marathons.
“Because we raised so much for Disney and we were so much over our goal, we were sponsored to run the Long Island half by TNT, so now we’re raising for San Diego,” said Tobin.
“It has been an amazing journey for all of us, and we are super ambitious – and maybe a little crazy – to continue growing Team Doc and raising funds to support such a great cause. You may even see us signing up for a full marathon (26.2 miles) in the future,” Tobin added.
