Mother’s Day is right around the corner, 55 days that is.
It takes place May 13 this year, a day in which we all honor the women who brought us into the world or raised us, those women we call “mom.”
While many know what the day is and are making plans with siblings on how to spend it and make it special, most don’t know exactly how or when it came about.
According to USAFederalHolidays.com, Mother’s Day blossomed in the U.S. in 1908, when one woman named Anna Jarvis started the first Mother’s Day celebration in West Virginia.
She reportedly campaigned for a national day on which everyone would focus on their mother and in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed the national holiday into law.
While many enjoy the day, especially mothers, its popularity is attributed to the profits it pulls in for flower shops, jewelry stores and card companies like Hallmark.
“Mother’s Day is made for telling these women how much they mean to you,” reads Hallmark’s website. This year, those celebrating Mother’s Day can visit Hallmark to find neat ideas on how to make mom feel special. “Write her an old-fashioned pen-on-paper letter to express your gratitude,” is one suggestion from Hallmark.
But the day doesn’t need to be one of spending money, instead spending time. One of the most popular ways to spend Mother’s Day, is by cooking breakfast for mom and spending the day with her. Another great thing to do, according to Mothersday2012, is to tell her she’s special.
“Don’t let that opportunity to tell your mom how special she is pass you by. Take time to show her and tell her how much she means to you this year,” reads the website. “This is that one, official day where we can lay aside everything else and spoil our moms, the way they spoiled us and looked out for us for our whole lives.”
