Yankees reliever Joba Chamberlain suffered a “very significant” injury to his right ankle while jumping on a trampoline with his son, according to reports.
The right-hander underwent possibly season-ending surgery Thursday night for an open dislocation of his ankle, and is expected to remain in the hospital for several more days, according to reports.
There is no timetable for his return, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman reportedly said. “Obviously it’s a significant injury,” he noted.
“He’s facing a lot right now,” Cashman said, according to the Associated Press. “I can’t tell you, really, anything more than something unfortunate happened. We’re in the very early information side of this thing.”
The Yankees GM noted that Chamberlain’s son, Karter, was not hurt.
Chamberlain was expected to return to the Yankees bullpen sometime this season after undergoing elbow surgery last season.
The 26-year-old reliever appeared in 27 games last season, pitching to a 2.83 ERA and 24 strikeouts.
Cashman didn’t exactly say where the incident occurred, only giving a loose description of some sort of recreation center.
“I feel bad because I know how much he loves his game,” he added, “and how much he was looking forward to coming back ahead of schedule. It’s clearly derailed that, but what more does that mean, I don’t know. A lot of things must be running through his mind.”
