It appears that Brandon Jacobs will be the second member of the New York Giants to join the team they beat to advance to the Super Bowl last season.
ESPN is reporting that Jacobs signed a one-year deal with the San Francisco 49ers, citing unnamed league sources.
Jacobs would be joining wide receiver Mario Manningham, who joined the 49ers as a free agent after his clutch catch riding the sideline during the Giants game-winning drive in the Super Bowl.
Jacobs, 29, will be joining running back Frank Gore in the backfield.
Big Blue released Jacobs eight days before a $500,000 roster bonus was set to kick in on March 17. He was also slated to earn a base salary of $4.4 million.
Before his release, the Giants and Jacobs attempted to restructure his deal, but the two sides were unable to come to an agreement. Jacobs had already took a pay cut last June to give the Giants some salary cap flexibility to sign fellow running back Ahmad Bradshaw.
The big running back’s production has declined the last three seasons after he rushed for more than 1,000 yards in consecutive seasons in 2007 and 2008.
Last season was his worst in the NFL, collecting 571 yards rushing on 152 carries, and averaging only 3.8 yards per carry, nearly two yards fewer than the year before.
Manningham, who had 39 receptions and 523 receiving yards last season with the Giants, signed a two-year deal with the 49ers.
