Hundreds attend to have heads shaved or donate funds for cancer research
Marcus Christ Hall, located on the grounds of New Hyde Park Village Hall, corner of Jericho Turnpike Road and New Hyde Park Road, was the scene, once again, of the 4th Annual St. Baldrick’s fundraiser for pediatric cancer, held in conjunction with the village and the Nassau County Police 3rd Precinct.
St. Baldrick’s foundation states it is “a volunteer-driven charity committed to funding the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers and give survivors long and healthy lives.” It also states that “cancer is the number one disease killer of children in the United States.”
The aim this year at the New Hyde Park venue, was to raise more funds than last year. Making sure that came to fruition were volunteers from the village, members of the Nassau County Police Department, mainly from the 3rd Precinct, and area residents who came to either have their heads shaved, buy raffle tickets or just donate money to this very worthy cause.
The main “movers and shakers” of this event, as they have been in the past, were Patrick Farrell of New Hyde Park, who is the former New Hyde Park village clerk and now the Floral Park village clerk and 3rd Precinct police officer Nick Mosesso. They not only organized the event, but Farrell entertained on his piano, most of the time playing “oldies but goodies” to the delight of all.
Other police officers stopped in to support the event and the three hard-working “head-shavers” were policewomen who are also licensed beauticians.
New Hyde Park Girl Scouts from various troops passed out trays of Girl Scout cookies.
Even 3rd Precinct Inspector Kevin Canavan, along with Deputy Inspector Sean McCarthy were on the scene giving donations, though not having their heads shaved.
Further, marvelous raffles were sold, giving everyone a chance to win a great prize donated by local merchants, which is always fun and is a great way to raise additional funds.
