New Hyde Park Fire District Marlins VS AppleBees Angels
A beautiful night for baseball brought out the best both teams could offer. A closely contested game that was not decided until the final pitch, with the Marlins earning their first victory of the year. The Marlins were lead by Dean Caldwell turning in a 3 for 3 performance at the plate and an RBI. Michael Femia went 2 for 2 with a stolen base, Danny Simmons grinded out a couple tough at bats and some smart play in the field. Danny Garcia launched a double, driving in a run and a stolen base. Anthony Schembeck with a walk, run scored, and a quality pitching performance. Justin Cosgrove with a single to drive in the winning run and two quality innings behind the plate. Phil Schurr with two hits, two RBIs and two quality innings on the mound, earning him the win. Adam Miller with a hit, a walk, and two sharp innings pitched. Michael Morrone had two hits, scored the game winning run, and had a highlight reel play in the field. Stephen Derocchis was on base three times with a stolen base, and Allesandro Gullo turned some gold glove type plays over at first. Overall a quality team performance.
Salmon Limousine Services Ducks 5 vs. Fundamentals Of Baseball Bears 3
For the first time all season, and after 4 games playing undermanned (all losses), the Ducks fielded a full squad of Majors players, and the results showed with a hard-fought 5-3 victory over the brave Bears. Pitching was the story early and often for the Ducks, as the trio of Joey Jacobs, Nick Femia (making his season debut with some nasty pitches) and Eric Del Valle went two strong innings each and kept the Bears at bay. After scratching out a first inning 1-0 lead, thanks to a series of walks, the Ducks were kept off the scoreboard for the next 3 innings. By the time the Ducks came to bat in the bottom of the 4th inning, the Bears had clawed their way to a 2-1 lead. Things changed in dramatic fashion in the bottom of the fourth inning for the Ducks. Mikey Rose and Joey Jacobs each walked to start the inning, and advanced to 3rd and 2nd on steals. Brian Volk batted next, and on a 2-strike count smashed a 2-run single to center scoring Mikey and Joey, and giving the Ducks the lead back at 3-2. But the Ducks were not finished for the inning. Up to the plate stepped Eric Del Valle, who proceeded to deposit a pitch into deep centerfield for a stand-up 2-run home run. The score remained the same heading to the top of the 6th inning, where the Bears were able to push across a run, bringing the score to 5-3 with a runner at 2nd base and the tying run at the plate. On a wild pitch, the runner from 2nd broke for third. The throw to try 3rd sailed a little high and headed for leftfield, and the runner sprinted for home. However, Joey Jacobs did an excellent job backing up the play, picked up the ball and fired a throw to the plate. Brian Volk positioned himself perfectly at the plate, threw off his mask, jumped up to grab the throw, secured the ball and tagged the runner out, ending the game. Even though this was clearly the defensive gem of the game, throughout the game the Ducks played solid defense, thanks in no small part to Robert Cass, Brian Korpacz, George Vlantis and Tyler Witt (George and Tyler were once again rocks behind the plate during the game).
Newman Orthodontic Dodgers vs. Modell’s Sporting Goods Braves
It was a dark dreary night for baseball when the Braves took the field against the mighty Dodgers. Leading the Braves offense was Christopher Chin with 4 hits. Also contributing to the offensive attack was Alan Sikora, Ryan Wasserman, Kenny Hirschfeld and Duhan Lee with 3 hits each. Kenny also hit a laser double. Edward Mauceri did a great job behind home plate. Christopher, Duhan, Ryan and Kenny made some very good plays in the field. Duhan caught a bomb in the outfield and then threw a strike to first to complete a double play. Brian O’Connor, Michael Paladino, Christian Sikiric and Anthony Levia all contributed to a great team effort. The Dodgers were a tough opponent and also played a great game.
Hand Rolled Bagels Padres vs. Newman Orthodontics Dodgers
New Hyde Park- The Hand Rolled Bagels Padres rolled out of the gate with 21 runs in the inaugural match-up of the spring 2012 season. Led by Vincent Pepe, Joe Montoni, and Christian Flynn (who are batting a combined 1.000 after one game), the Padres’ bats were relentless. Joe Mattei, Andrew Stein and Joseph Vieni personally gave all lucky fans in attendance tinnitus with the sounds of their bats bashing against the baseball. Defensively, Marco Gullo, Sanay Shah and Stephen Coffey were flawless, perfectly fielding every ball that came their way. Michael O’Grady played heads-up ball behind the plate, proving to all naysayers that a catcher does not need a mitt as long as he has the right mask. Lastly, Andrew Kern solidified his reputation as a leader on and off the field with the help of timely hitting, great fielding, and… Munchkins. The Hand Rolled Bagels Padres continue their quest for perfection on Friday. Good seats still available.
Dominick’s Italian/American Deli Diamondbacks vs. Virgilio Chiropractic and Wellness Center Rangers
The pitching rotation expanded as the Diamondbacks featured Marc Baronci and Matthew Rubinic. After some early nerves, they both settled down and pitched well. The game stayed close as in the subsequent innings Cenzo Montoni, Matthew Merolla and Jackson Benjamin limited the Rangers to only 4 runs. A rally was started in the fourth inning as after a lead off walk by Nicholas Rubinic, Brandon Colon belted a triple scoring one run. The rally was silenced as a rope by Michael Campagnoulo was snagged by the Rangers shortstop. Garrett Roth, Anthony Steves and Thomas Rubinic all had excellent at bats verses the Rangers ACE, but no runs were scored. The Diamondbacks made a comeback in the top of the sixth inning that ended just short of a victory. The winning streak ended at 2 games and the team is anxious to restart their winning ways on Saturday.
St. John’s University Rockies – 6 vs. Costello’s Ace Hardware Phillies – 5
The Rockies and Phillies squared off on Tuesday in what turned out to be a well played and exciting game. Matt Strocchia set the tone for the Rockies pitching two scoreless innings to open the game, and Joey Muratore got things started on offense with a deep drive to left center and also made a number of outstanding plays in the field. Luke Notine provided two excellent innings on the hill doing a great job throwing strikes and making outs while Danny McClellan was solid behind the plate to open game keeping his pitcher on track throwing strikes. Sam Motelson played a great game in the field and had fantastic turns at the plate. Alan Birnbaum gave the team a strong inning on the mound with a couple of much needed strikeouts, and his battery-mate Frankie Sannuti did a good job behind the plate to help Alan through the inning. Jeremy Wong showed great hustle, making good contact and moving the runners over, and Chris Gould was solid in the field. At the plate, Chris took one for the team but was able to shake it off and show some great hustle on the base paths. The game was a back and forth affair heading into the sixth when Gavin Borduas made a heads-up throw from right field in the top half to get a rally killing out. He then led off the bottom of the sixth with a hit that eventually led to the tying run. After making a number of great defensive plays, Stephen Perno worked out a walk in the bottom of the sixth and scored the winning run when Paul DePaulis came through with a game-winning 2-run triple.
Dominick’s Italian/American Deli Diamondbacks vs. NHP Fire District Marlins
As the saying goes: pitching wins games and the Diamondbacks pitched very well today. Starting pitcher Garrett Roth threw strikes and got out of trouble in the first by striking out the side. Nicholas Rubinic pitched a scoreless second and gave up no hits. Cenzo Montoni had one of his best pitching starts of the season with 4 strikeouts and no runs after 2 innings pitched. Mathew Merolla pitched two strong innings and got out of trouble in the sixth inning with back to back strikeouts after the Marlins loaded the bases. The offense was fantastic today. Singles by Michael Campagnoulo, Garret Roth, Thomas Rubininc and Nicholas set the table as doubles by Mathew Rubinic, Cenzo Montoni, Anthony Steves and Marc Baronci helped power in runs. The game was sealed with a triple by Brandon Colon and a home run by Mathew Merolla in the fifth. Defense protected the lead as Thomas Rubinic and Michael Campagnoulo made impressive infield plays. The Diamondbacks have restarted their winning ways and look forward to their next game.
St. John’s University Rockies – 9 vs. Applebee’s Angels – 9
In a tight back and forth game, the Rockies showed fight and determination. Danny McClellan got the team off to a great start pitching a scoreless first inning and did a good job battling through a tough second inning on the mound. Danny was helped with some strong fielding led by Joey Muratore who played really well in the field making a couple of very timely plays to limit the other team’s chances. On offense, Chris Gould worked out a couple of walks to get on base leading off the first and third innings, and Alan Birnbaum did well at the plate providing a much needed offensive lift. Matt Strocchia played very well in the field and had a couple of deep extra base hits at the plate. Gavin Borduas had some nice at bats highlighted by a bullet between third and short which eventually led to a run, and Eli Goldberger had a very tough at bat against the other team’s ace and ran hard on the base paths. In the field, Frankie Sannuti played a strong third base to start the game and showed great hustle throughout, and Jeremy Wong almost made a great play on a tough line drive to right. Jeremy did a great job staying with the play and was able to hold the runner to a single. After going ahead by a run in the top of the fifth, the Rockies hit the field in the bottom of the sixth trying to preserve a win. After a couple of runners got on base, Luke Notine made a game saving play on a hot shot to second which helped hold the opposition to one run, preserving the tie. Stephen Perno did an excellent job getting back to cover first on the play, and though he was hurt in a collision with the runner coming down the line, he was able to stay in the game to finish it out. Great job Rockies!
Island Wide Medical Associates Rays vs New Hyde Park Kiwanis Reds
The first win of the season for the Island Wide Medical Associates Rays was an all around great game for the Rays that resulted in a 8-3 win. Nick Lekuvlic,Phil Menist and Sean Fishbein all pitched well giving up only 3 hits in the game combined.The Rays jumped out to a 4-0 lead and never looked back. Nick Lekuvlic started things off with a triple, then he was singled home by Eric Madenberg. The inning continued with singles by Phil Menist,David Klebanow and an RBI groundout by Bailey Lee. In the third the rays scored 3 more times with singles by Phil Menist,David Klebanow and Bailey Lee. In the field Hans Dewitte caught the entire game as threw out two runners trying to steal third.
Island Medical Associate Rays vs. The All Island Dermatology Giants
The Island Wide Medical Associate Rays got off to a fast start scoring 4 runs in the first Philip Menist, Jake Glueck, David Klebanow and Sean Fishbein all got consecutive hits in the inning. It was all the runs that the Rays could mange until the sixth when Phil Menist hit a two-run single,but the Rays came up short losing 9-6. Nick Lekuvlic,Phil Menist, Jake Glueck and Sean Fishbein all pitched well in the loss.
Stutzman Funeral Home Dodgers vs New Hyde Park Funeral Home Tigers
The Stutzman Funeral Home Dodgers had a wonderful picture day and instructional baseball session on a sunny Saturday morning. After practicing their baseball skills, the Dodgers enjoyed their game against the Tigers. Gina Campagnuolo, Jesse Tricario and Thomas Slaski hit the ball well off the tee and young Michael Duda and Myles Brown both sprinted to first base in a flash. Aedan Cotter and Sabrina Derocchis played their positions in the field wonderfully and Dylan Colon fielded a few firmly hit ground balls . Cooper Sang continues to hit and field like a real ballplayer and both Ethan Goldberg and Jeremy Chuck made a few key catches. Nicholas Gregory and Ryan Louie also played really well and ran to first base very fast when they hit the ball. The Dodger team worked hard , had a lot of fun and learned a lot. Everyone is looking forward to next week and some more baseball.
New Hyde Park Elks Royals vs. Hand Rolled Bagels Padres
New Hyde Park- The Hand Rolled Bagels Padres (led by clutch hitting from Sanay Shah, Joseph Vieni and Andrew Stein) proved unflappable in their quest to play all their games by hosting the New Hyde Park Elks Royals Friday night. Stephen Coffey, Andrew Kern, Christian Flynn and Joe Mattei each had multiple-RBI games during the 14 run barrage. Vincent Pepe, Joe Montoni, and Michael O’Grady each turned in defensive gems, while Marco Gullo was a human high-light-reel with his unassisted double play. The boys will continue to roll over the competition when they face their next opponent on Wednesday night.
Newman Orthodontics Dodgers vs. Hand Rolled Bagels Padres
Many former teammates squared off on the diamond at Manor Oaks field number one. The Dodgers scored 77 percent more runs than last week’s contest. The likes of John Dunn,Scot McClellan and Matthew Capelle led the way with superb defensive and clutch hitting. Chris Zovko and Bobby Symanski eached crossed the plate a plethora of times each. As the clouds rolled in and the night grew dim, Dodgers Michael Merrola, A.J. Ponzo and Joshua Henderson dug deep and contributed with opposite field runs batted in. Luke Gruosso and Lance Yetikyel showed great hustle from beginning to end.
Sportography River Sharks 8 vs. Fundamental Baseball Bears 0
On what was a perfect spring evening for their opening game of the 2012 Majors Division season, the mighty River Sharks jumped out to an early lead against the Bears and captured their first victory of the season, an 8-0 win against an impressive Bears team at the Merillon field complex this evening. Starting pitcher Thomas Messina looked sharp on the mound in his Majors debut, holding the Bears lineup hitless with a solid three-inning performance that included eight strikeouts, two walks and no earned runs. Messina also drove in the first run of the River Sharks season with a base hit in the first inning. Also making his first Majors appearance on the hill was John Napolitano who had three strikeouts over one and two-thirds innings of relief and contributed offensively with a triple and run scored in the first inning. Closer Max Silverstein struck out the only batter he faced in the fifth inning but more importantly, started a four-run rally in the third inning with an RBI double and then came around to score on a three-run homer to deep centerfield by slugger Bryan Wu. Michael Mellone got his season off to a great start with a hit in each of his two at bats including a double in the second and a single in the third. Mellone also showed-off some speed around the diamond with two stolen bases. Scott Schanter picked up where he left off last season with excellent defensive work at second base as he cleanly fielded a hard hit ground ball in the first inning. Schanter also contributed offensively with his first RBI of the season on a ground out in the second inning. Thomas Haug had a great game behind the plate as catcher as he displayed lightning-fast reflexes, great hands and a strong and accurate arm. Kyle Forde and Gregory Capelle combined for an RBI and run scored while each flashed the leather in the field. A special thanks to call-up Peter Carreca who not only contributed to the bottom line with a stolen base and a run scored, but patrolled the outfield with authority.
