Baby Avery Canahuati has made headlines all over the world after her parents made a bucket list for their ill 5-month-old.

Their daughter was born with a form of muscular dystrophy. It’s a genetic disorder called spinal muscular atrophy, or SMA for short. Though it is a pretty rare disease, it is the highest genetic killer of infants and toddlers, according to the SMA Foundation.

Even though the chances of having a child with SMA vary organization to organization, AZFamily.com reports, in order for a child to get the disorder both parents much be carriers of the recessive gene.

Doctors told Avery’s parents that the child would not make it to 3 years old due to the severe nature of her disorder.

Baby Avery’s parents were then inspired to make the most of their child’s tragic situation. They created a bucket list for the infant moments they wanted her to experience before she died. But the parents weren’t able to get too far along the list- one of the five-month-old’s lungs unexpectedly collapsed and she went into cardiac arrest.

“Avery’s passing this quickly came as a complete shock to all of us, as she had just been given a thumbs up at her last doctors appointment only three days ago,” her father wrote on Avery’s blog. “While we were aware of the severity of her diagnosis, we never lost hope for Avery and even in her passing, we still have hope for our daughter and all of her friends.”

But there were a few things Avery was able to cross off her bucket list before she passed: she got her first kiss, went to her first baseball game and even got a (temporary) tattoo, CBS News reports.

Avery’s parents hope their daughter’s untimely death brings awareness to the genetic disorder.
