The Sea Cliff Yacht Club has announced dates and registration details for the 36th Annual Around Long Island Regatta (ALIR). The summer classic sailboat race will begin on Thursday, July 26 and conclude by Sunday, July 30 with a beach party awards gala.
The ALIR combines the challenges of open ocean racing and the beauty of coastal cruising, setting a breathtaking 190-mile course from Brooklyn to Montauk, into Gardiners Bay and Long Island Sound. A workout for all the sailing skills, the race is a favorite of veteran racing captains trying to match the blistering 17-hour course record, and is also perfect for weekend cruisers who want to test the racing waters.
Veteran sailors and first time entrants are welcome. Captains and crews hail from Nassau and Suffolk counties, all five New York City boroughs, Connecticut, New Jersey, and further away.
The race begins on Thursday afternoon, July 26 in the waters off Rockaway Point, and ends in Hempstead Harbor, where the Sea Cliff Yacht Club provides music, food, and drinks for the hundreds of registered racers and their guests. Trophies are awarded to the top three finishers in each division, which include IRC, PHRF spinnaker and non-spinnaker, multi-hull, double-hand, collegiate, junior and club teams, and one-design divisions for five or more boats. Moorings, anchorage and launch service are available through the yacht club.
