Kiwanis President Delivers Supplies To Jamaican School

Inspired by her time at NYD Kiwanis Mid-Winter Conference, Levittown Kiwanis President Ann Torcivia decided to incorporate her business as a travel agent into her Kiwanis work serving the children of the world. After contacting the Discovery Bay Kiwanis Club in Jamaica regarding their effort to support the island nation’s school children, Torcivia asked clients traveling with her to Jamaica to bring school supplies for the needy.

As Torcivia put out the word that she was looking for school supplies, the Bowling Green K-Kids responded by holding a club school supply collection drive. Torcivia also received items from Kiwanians from several clubs in the Long Island South Central Division.

When Torcivia and the Party 105.3 Radio Group of Long Island arrived in Jamaica, their suitcases were stuffed with school supplies. After meeting with Kiwanians of the Discovery Bay Club in Jamaica, Torcivia visited the Hoolebury Primary School where she presented the school supplies to the school’s administrator, teachers and students.

Torcivia was also given the honor of naming four Hoolebury students as “Terrific Kids” on behalf of the Discovery Bay Club.

Terrific Kids is a Kiwanis-sponsored program that provides schools with a tool to reward students for special achievements that may otherwise go unnoticed. Levittown school children are regularly recognized for their efforts through this program.

After Torcivia shared with the Jamaican schoolchildren that the Bowling Green K-Kids had donated a majority of the school supplies, the Hoolebury students filmed a “thank you” to Bowling Green. The students also performed a Jamaican children’s dance, which was included with the “thank you” video.

After the presentation, Party 105.3 interviewed Torcivia and Discovery Bay Kiwanis President Nellie Seivwright live on air from Jamaica. The focus of the broadcast was Kiwanis’ global mission to serve the children of the world and the organization’s international fellowship.

Upon her return to Long Island, Torcivia visited the Bowling Green K-Kids meeting. She showed the “thank you” video, the Jamaican dance and shared a musical slide show of her visit to Jamaica.
