Spring Yard Sale

The Wantagh Preservation Society will be holding its spring yard sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (rain date May 20) on museum grounds, 1700 Wantagh Ave., Wantagh. Free Car Seat Safety Check

Sponsored by Senator Charles J. Fuschillo Jr. (R-Merrick) from 9 a.m. to noon at John Burns Park (front west parking lot), 4990 Merrick Rd., Massapequa Park. Officials from the Nassau County Traffic Safety Board will be performing free safety seat inspections to make sure that drivers have children’s car seats properly installed and secured. Car seats can reduce the threat of injury or death by as much as 65 percent, but only if they are installed properly. Appointments will be scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. World War II Historical Encampment

Melville resident Robert Scarabino will be participating in a tribute to every American G.I. who has defended our country when a World War II encampment is held at Old Bethpage Restoration Village, 1303 Round Swamp Rd., Old Bethpage, complete with living historians, tanks and artillery during the weekend of May 19 and 20. The living history program will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Additional military vehicles from the New York Military Vehicle Club will also be on hand for display and demonstrations. Admission is $10 adults; $7 children.

Free Veterans Benefits Seminar

In recognition of Armed Forces Day, Levittown Community Church, 100 Periwinkle Rd., Levittown, will be hosting a free Veterans Benefits Seminar for all military members now serving, as well as those who have previously served our country. All Breed Dog Show

Walk For Hunger

Wantagh Memorial Congregational Church will sponsor the 31st Annual CROP Hunger Walk. Twenty-five percent of the funds raised will go to the Freeport Emergency Food Pantry, an outreach of the Long Island Council of Churches. String Poet Prize Awards Ceremony

Presented by the Long Island Violin Shop and String Poet at 7 p.m. at Steinway Piano Gallery, 505 Walt Whitman Rd., Melville. This Studio Series event will bring together music and poetry to celebrate the winners of the 2012 String Poet Prize and the launch of Volume II, Issue 1 of String Poet magazine. Hosted by String Poet founder and editor Annabelle Moseley, this event includes a concert by composer and pianist Barry Tognolini and reading by finalist judge Kim Bridgford. The evening culminates with the launch of the journal and the reading of the first prize winning poem, “Upkeep” by J.D. Smith, followed by the premiere of Barry Tognolini’s composition. Military Servicemen And Women To Be Honored

American Airpower Museum at Republic Airport, 1230 New Hwy, Farmingdale, will honor military servicemen and women at 6 p.m. There will be an opportunity to tour the flight line and inspect many of the operational aircraft and WWII fighters that will be flying in the Memorial Day Weekend Bethpage Federal Credit Union Jones Beach air show. There will also be an armor parade led by a Sherman tank, artillery and more. Also expect a 1940’s radio program where elected officials get to play themselves. This reception is by invitation only and, because it is taking place alongside an active runway with operational military aircraft, the electronic invitation needs to be produced at the entrance along with a photo ID. Food and beverages may be purchased. There is a change in gate pass accreditation and attendees will need to go online to download a reception ticket. Walk Like MADD

A non-competitive fundraising walk hosted by Mothers Against Drunk Driving. The event begins at 9 a.m., with the ceremony beginning at 10 a.m., on the Great Lawn at Farmingdale State College, 2350 Broadhollow Rd. Over 1500 participants are expected to come and show their support of MADD and its mission – to eliminate drunk driving, assist the victims of this violent crime and to prevent underage drinking. The event will be attended by dignitaries, supporters and most importantly family walk teams representing those loved ones who were killed or severely injured by drunk drivers. Garage Sale

YES Community Counseling Center, 75 Grand Ave., Massapequa, will be conducting its Annual Garage Sale on June 30 (rain date July 1) at the back of the offices (New York Ave. between Central Ave. and Hicksville Rd.) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. YES will be collecting items, old and new (but saleable). ‘To Grow Is To Know. To Know Is To Grow’ Exhibit

Paul Gatto was commissioned by the Farmingdale Library to paint a piece that was presented there on May 5. He was asked to come up with subject matter that would be significant for the library and that would display the computer age. Paul Gatto came up with a tree of knowledge as the main feature. The tree rises from a large volume with bits and bytes streaming as text. The painting on board is 55 inches by 61 inches and will hang permanently over the south side entrance.

Watercolors By Cindy And JoAnn

The Farmingdale Library is hosting an exhibit of watercolor paintings in the Art Gallery by Cynthia Dunton and JoAnn Krapp during the month of May. Their selected works include landscapes, florals and portraits. The artists have studied under Paul Gatto. A reception is planned for May 20 from 2 to 4 p.m.

Farmingdale Adult Day Care Center

A social day care program offering socialization and stimulation to persons 60 and over. The caring staff provides innovative activities for those who can no longer attend regular senior centers because of physical and/or mental impairment. It also affords respite to caregivers allowing them valued time to devote to matters of home or personal needs. This interfaith service meets on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, 407 Main St. Support groups are also held once a month on Wednesdays. Free Educational Services

Free courses and academic advice is available to economically and educationally disadvantages adults. The LI Educational Opportunity Center offers programs leading to employment in a variety of fields as well as entrance to college. The LIEOC has satellite units in many areas. •Beginners Hebrew course, sponsored by Hadassah, will be held at on Mondays at 7 p.m. Instructor Murray Zwerling. For those who would like to learn or improve their basic Hebrew reading.

•Introduction to Jewish Prayer on Mondays at 8:15 p.m. Text: To Pray as a Jew by Rabbi Haim Donnin. Instructor Rabbi Alan Lavin. The course is designed for those who would like to learn the history, meaning and structure of the siddur.

Adults and Children With Learning Disabilities

ACLD, a private not-for-profit agency, is offering individual and family counseling for the primary caregivers of individuals with developmental disabilities. Support groups are available for parents and siblings and new groups for senior parents, parents of transitioning high school students as well as a group for parents who have a developmental disability. Farmingdale United Methodist Nursery School

Offers classes for children from 18 months old through 5 years old where they can grow, play and learn together. The school offers a well-rounded program designed to stimulate the child creatively, socially, intellectually, physically and emotionally. Children are exposed to a variety of art-media, paint, finger paint, chalk, dough, pasting, cutting, coloring, writing, block play, music, group work, books, circle and story time, cooking experiences, puppet show, all types of parties, movement classes, computers, outdoor and indoor large motor activities and stimulating walking distance field trips. Bring a Smile to a Poor Person’s Face

That is the invitation being sent across LI by Hope for the Future Ministries, a Farmingdale-based not-for-profit organization which helps the poor and homeless. Items needed include warm hats and scarves, thermal gloves and socks, thermal underwear, sweatshirts and sweatpants, toiletries and toys, new gifts, unwrapped with price tags removed. •Alcohol/Substance Dependency Support Group. Celebrate Recovery is a nationally acclaimed program that invites people of any faith or no faith at all to experience God’s healing power in the lives of all who suffer from alcohol or drug dependency. Mondays from 7:30 to 9 p.m.

•Divorce/Separation Support Group. DivorceCare helps people recover from the pain of separation and divorce. Become a part of a small support group of people who are experiencing the same. This is a non-denominational video seminar with nationally recognized experts on divorce and recovery. Thursdays from 7:30 to 9 p.m.

•Grief Recovery Support Group. GriefShare is a non-denominational, 13-week video seminar featuring interviews with leading authors, counselors, speakers and pastors with years of expertise in grief recovery. Tuesdays from 7 to 9 p.m.

Pretty New Thrift Shop

Donations are needed for the Pretty New Thrift Shop, 238 Main St., Farmingdale. The shop supports the work of Central Nassau Guidance and Counseling Services, Inc., a multi-service mental health and substance abuse agency located in Hicksville. The shop is open Monday-Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and accepts gently used clothing, housewares, furniture and collectibles. Call 420-1394.

Free Writer’s Workshops

Got a hidden talent? Why not share it and develop it at a free writer’s workshop? The LI Writer’s Guild is a friendly, Nassau County-based organization of amateur/professional, published/unpublished poets, essayists, novelists and short story writers who meet at informal workshops at the Levittown and Bethpage Libraries. Everything from plot development to characterization to basic literary theory for the fiction and nonfiction writer alike is discussed and practiced. There are reading and critiquing sessions and recommendations and contacts for the more serious writers seeking to publish their work is provided.
