Spring Yard Sale

Free Car Seat Safety Check
Sponsored by Senator Charles J. Fuschillo Jr. (R-Merrick) from 9 a.m. to noon at John Burns Park (front west parking lot), 4990 Merrick Rd., Massapequa Park. Officials from the Nassau County Traffic Safety Board will be performing free safety seat inspections to make sure that drivers have children’s car seats properly installed and secured. Car seats can reduce the threat of injury or death by as much as 65 percent, but only if they are installed properly. Appointments will be scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. World War II Historical Encampment
Melville resident Robert Scarabino will be participating in a tribute to every American G.I. who has defended our country when a World War II encampment is held at Old Bethpage Restoration Village, 1303 Round Swamp Rd., Old Bethpage, complete with living historians, tanks and artillery during the weekend of May 19 and 20. The living history program will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Additional military vehicles from the New York Military Vehicle Club will also be on hand for display and demonstrations. Admission is $10 adults; $7 children.

Walk For Hunger
Wantagh Memorial Congregational Church will sponsor the 31st Annual CROP Hunger Walk. String Poet Prize Awards Ceremony
Presented by the Long Island Violin Shop and String Poet at 7 p.m. at Steinway Piano Gallery, 505 Walt Whitman Rd., Melville. This Studio Series event will bring together music and poetry to celebrate the winners of the 2012 String Poet Prize and the launch of Volume II, Issue 1 of String Poet magazine. Military Servicemen And Women To Be Honored
American Airpower Museum at Republic Airport, 1230 New Hwy, Farmingdale, will honor military servicemen and women at 6 p.m. There will be an opportunity to tour the flight line and inspect many of the operational aircraft and WWII fighters that will be flying in the Memorial Day Weekend Bethpage Federal Credit Union Jones Beach air show. There will also be an armor parade led by a Sherman tank, artillery and more. Also expect a 1940’s radio program where elected officials get to play themselves. This reception is by invitation only and, because it is taking place alongside an active runway with operational military aircraft, the electronic invitation needs to be produced at the entrance along with a photo ID. Walk Like MADD
A non-competitive fundraising walk hosted by Mothers Against Drunk Driving. The event begins at 9 a.m., with the ceremony beginning at 10 a.m., on the Great Lawn at Farmingdale State College, 2350 Broadhollow Rd. Over 1500 participants are expected to come and show their support of MADD and its mission – to eliminate drunk driving, assist the victims of this violent crime and to prevent underage drinking. The event will be attended by dignitaries, supporters and most importantly family walk teams representing those loved ones who were killed or severely injured by drunk drivers. ‘To Grow Is To Know. To Know Is To Grow’ Exhibit
Paul Gatto was commissioned by the Farmingdale Library to paint a piece that was presented there on May 5. He was asked to come up with subject matter that would be significant for the library and that would display the computer age. Paul Gatto came up with a tree of knowledge as the main feature. The tree rises from a large volume with bits and bytes streaming as text. The painting on board is 55 inches by 61 inches and will hang permanently over the south side entrance.
Watercolors By Cindy And JoAnn
The Farmingdale Library is hosting an exhibit of watercolor paintings in the Art Gallery by Cynthia Dunton and JoAnn Krapp during the month of May. Their selected works include landscapes, florals and portraits. The artists have studied under Paul Gatto. A reception is planned for May 20 from 2 to 4 p.m.

Farmingdale Adult Day Care Center
A social day care program offering socialization and stimulation to persons 60 and over. The caring staff provides innovative activities for those who can no longer attend regular senior centers because of physical and/or mental impairment. It also affords respite to caregivers allowing them valued time to devote to matters of home or personal needs. This interfaith service meets on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, 407 Main St. Support groups are also held once a month on Wednesdays. Adults and Children With Learning Disabilities
ACLD, a private not-for-profit agency, is offering individual and family counseling for the primary caregivers of individuals with developmental disabilities. Support groups are available for parents and siblings and new groups for senior parents, parents of transitioning high school students as well as a group for parents who have a developmental disability. Farmingdale United Methodist Nursery School

That is the invitation being sent across LI by Hope for the Future Ministries, a Farmingdale-based not-for-profit organization which helps the poor and homeless. Free Writer’s Workshops
Got a hidden talent? Why not share it and develop it at a free writer’s workshop? The LI Writer’s Guild is a friendly, Nassau County-based organization of amateur/professional, published/unpublished poets, essayists, novelists and short story writers who meet at informal workshops at the Levittown and Bethpage Libraries. Everything from plot development to characterization to basic literary theory for the fiction and nonfiction writer alike is discussed and practiced.
