Even if you don’t have Celiac disease, you can celebrate Celiac Awareness month by going to Long Island restaurants who have some scrumptious gluten-free items to choose from.

For those who are not familiar with Celiac disease, it is when a person’s body cannot tolerate gluten- the protein found in wheat, barley and rye. The disease is different from an allergy or gluten intolerance because it does not cause an instant, severe reaction. Celiac, unlike an allergy or gluten intolerance, is an autoimmune disease and as a result it takes longer to set it. If a person with Celiac disease is exposed to gluten their body cannot digest it, which then makes the body attack itself and internal organs.   Over an extended period of time, Celiac disease can lead to cancer, malnutrition and other disorders. Though being gluten-free is sometimes seen as a diet or fad, it’s actually a serious, chronic, lifelong problem which is sometimes overlooked.

In honor of Celiac awareness month we’ve included the descriptions of some of the top Long Island gluten-free friendly restaurants. Just because you may be gluten intolerant, doesn’t mean you have to suffer from it.

Check the restaurants out at the Best Of Long Island page and let us know which one is your favorite!
