Fans of “The Little Mermaid” were ecstatic to find out that Animal Planet was producing a show featuring mermaids. But to everyone’s surprise it wasn’t a show fit for someone looking for a Disney flick.
Mermaids: The Body Found aired this weekend and ended Animal Planet’s first Monster Week, which ran from May 21-28. It was science fiction special based on some real events and scientific theory.
The two-hour special premiered Sunday and gave an in depth look at what mermaids would look like, act like and how they would communicate, if they existed. Researchers and scientists even gave interviews of the finding of a creature they believe was a mermaid and footage was included of a possible mermaid find.
“This is a fairytale told and retold to children everywhere,” Animal Planet said in a press release. “It’s a beloved story about a legendary creature that’s described in the mythologies of nearly every human culture in history. People across all continents who’ve had no communications with other societies have described the same half-man, half-fish anomaly – they’ve spoken about the same mythic animal.”

The show followed the story of two scientists who claimed that they had found the remains of an unidentified sea creature that closely resembled a human. They studied the body, though it was later confiscated by authorities and “written off.”
The show also featured animations of what mermaids would look like — webbed hands and a boney tail — and live like, teaming up with dolphins and whales for protection and hunting.
The show also linked mermaid theories to unsolved real-world events, including a mysterious sound called “The Bloop” in the deep Pacific, recorded by the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration in 1997, and featured amateur recording of a creature resembling a mermaid.
