A Night of Improv

The Sarah Grace Foundation For Children With Cancer, Inc., will hold its 2nd Annual Theatrical Fundraiser, “Unrehearsed: A Night of Improv,” at 7 p.m. on June 1 and June 2 in the Hicksville United Methodist Church Social Hall, 130 West Old Country Rd., Hicksville. The family-oriented show will be similar to the popular improvisational comedy television show Whose Line Is It Anyway? Tickets, which are $12 per person, can be purchased at the door or in advance by visiting www.TheSarahGraceFoundation.org or calling The Sarah Grace Foundation at 516-433-9745. Proceeds will benefit the Long Island-based nonprofit corporation dedicated to helping other children and their families facing the financial and emotional challenges and hardships brought upon by childhood cancer.

The Garden City Historical Society is holding its 7th Annual A.T. Stewart Flea Market from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 109 Eleventh St. This is an ideal time to do some spring cleaning and weed through furniture residents don’t need and have no use for. All proceeds benefit the Garden City Historical Society.

Wellness Workshop For Breast Cancer Patients

Zumba Party for past and present breast cancer patients. Zumba combines Latin and international music as a fun and effective dance workout. Zumba can improve balance, flexibility and cardiovascular strength. This beginner’s level workshop will break down the intricate step-work of Zumba and is perfect for those who want to learn the basics and practice within their own limits. Comfortable clothing and shoes are recommended. Bring bottled water. Diana McCray, CWC, is a wellness coach and trainer, marketing professional and dynamic motivational speaker. Inaugural OHF Summer Gala

The Oxalosis and Hyperoxaluria Foundation invites the public to the Inaugural OHF Summer Gala at 7 p.m. at The Inn at New Hyde Park. Start off the summer with a night out of cocktails, dinner, dancing to tunes spun by DJ’s @ Work, live and silent auctions and raffles with all proceeds benefiting OHF. OHF is the only organization in the world dedicated to improving the care, treatment and finding a cure for Oxalosis, Primary Hyperoxaluria and related stone diseases – a disease that affects a Garden City resident. Concert

The Choir of St. John’s Cathedral, Albuquerque, is recognized as one of the finest choral ensembles in the region. In addition to Sunday morning responsibilities, the cathedral choir sings for monthly services of choral evensong, on major feasts, participates in the Cathedral Commissions program and is well-known for its internationally released recordings with Raven CD. “The adults have a beautiful blend, shaping their phrases with a finesse that is a joy to hear. The choristers make a lovely sound, rich in enthusiasm, warm in tone, and with a contagious energy to their performances” – Jonathan E. Exhibits

•The Garden City Library will exhibit 27 works by Rose Zelenetz. The works include paintings, sculpture, constructions and assemblages and mixed-media. The materials used include steel, copper, aluminum, acrylic paint, wood, textured paper, glass and plexiglass. Rose Zelenetz has exhibited at Ashawagh Hall, The Springs Invitational Exhibition and Guild Hall in East Hampton, and her works are held in private collections. She also serves as a docent at the Pollack-Krasner House Museum, the former studio and home of the artists Jackson Pollack and Lee Krasner and is a member of the East End Arts Council. Born in New York City, she holds B.A. and M.A. degrees from Hunter College and currently works and resides in both Garden City and East Hampton. The exhibit will be on display from June 1 through June 29 at the Garden City Library, 60 7th St., Garden City.

•“Opportunity and Impact: Works by Émigré Artists.” This original exhibition examines the role of émigré artists in reshaping the nature of American art. The exhibit features artists who arrived from Europe during the early 20th century to present-day émigrés from Africa, Cuba, and South Africa. American art traditions and directions have been profoundly influenced by the contributions of these artists. On view through July 27 at Hofstra University, HUM David Filderman Gallery, Joan and Donald E. Axinn Library, ninth floor, South Campus, Hempstead. Regular hours (through May 25) daily, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Summer hours (through July 27) Monday-Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Sunday, noon to 4 p.m.

Furniture Needed

The A.T. Stewart Exchange Consignment Shop, 109 Eleventh St., Garden City, is looking for furniture to add to its inventory. The shop can use cocktail tables, end tables, consoles, chairs of all types, dressers, dining room tables, breakfronts, servers, secretaries, mirrors, etc….it’s all in demand. If you have a particularly large piece, take a picture, and show it to Kris or Jill at the shop (516 746-8900). Consignees get 50 percent of the selling price. Parking is convenient because the shop is located on the lower level of the Garden City Historical Museum.

•Anxiety And Depression Group, a free self-help group for anxiety, panic disorder, depression, OCD and other nervous fears now meets every Thursdays at 8 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church, corner of Chester Ave. and New Hyde Park Rd., Garden City. Through the Recovery International process, members learn to manage stress, panic, anxiety, depression, anger, irrational fears, phobias, compulsions, obsessions and other emotional or behavioral problems. Members also learn how to face and manage psychosomatic symptoms such as heart palpitations, dizziness, shortness of breath, sweats, fatigue, headaches, numbness, chest pressure and sleep problems. All group leaders are trained lay volunteers who have experienced some type of difficulty with an emotional problem and practice the Recovery International method of self-help. Cradle Of Aviation Museum

In the world of aviation, signals and coded messages are an important part of how airplanes and air traffic control speak everyday. The Cradle of Aviation Museum has a variety of free family activities. Walk through the eight museum galleries and you’ll walk through over 100 years of aerospace history with 75 planes and space craft and a variety of examples of how pilots navigated and communicated from the early days of flight through the space program. Museum activities are free with admission and are available each day from noon to 4 p.m. The museum also is home to the IMAX Dome Theatre and is located on Charles Lindbergh Blvd., Museum Row.
