In 11 years, the first group of four humans will land on Mars to begin living there. Well, that’s the plan at least.

“Mars One will establish human settlement on Mars in 2023,” said the narrator of a new viral video explaining a plan to extend human existence to the red planet.

The first four humans will land on Mars that year and every two years after that, the video states, so a new group of humans will join the proposed settlement.

The video went viral in late May and already has more than 600,000 views. It described the proposed living arrangements for humans on Mars, who would live there permanently for their remaining years.

Theoretical Physicist Nobel Prize Winner, Dr. Gerard T Hooft made an appearance in the video and lent his opinion on the project.

“This will never work,” he said was his first reaction.  “But now look and listen more closely, this is really something that can be achieved.”

“This is going to be a media spectacle, the whole world be watching,” Hooft said of the excitement around the project.

While no one has ever gone to Mars before, Mars One promised that the planet is livable and the plans legitimate. “Mars One has designed a mission that is much simpler than previous designs for Mars missions,” the video states.

Right now, Mars One claims to have suppliers for every component of the project from all areas of the globe and will start putting the project into action in 2016, when a communication satellite and supply mission will be sent to Mars.

In 2018, the next phase of the mission will kick off when a huge planetary rover is slated to land on Mars and drive around to find the best location for settlement. By 2020, living units, life support units, a rover and more supplies will be sent to Mars to set up for human arrival.

The rovers will then prepare for humans by extracting the inflatable section from the living unit and the life support unit will prepare for human arrival as well. Finally, the crew will depart in a transit habitat in September 2022, when the settlement is fully operational and land seven months later to begin their lives as Martians.
