Dorothy B. Fisher, 90, died May 19, a resident of Peconic Landing in Greenport.
Mrs. Fisher was born in 1922. After graduating from Ohio’s Oberlin College in 1944 with a major in physics, she accepted a position at Bell Telephone Labs in Manhattan, where she worked from 1945-1948, and volunteered at the United Nations from 1948-1952. The only female in the class, she met her husband David during a summer physics course at the University of Chicago. They were married in 1946.
The Oberlin alum was a Garden City resident for 50 years. During this time she was a volunteer in the adult literacy program at the Nassau County Jail for 10 years, teaching inmates how to read. She was a member of the Garden City branch of AAUW, and she collected Christmas gifts for the Children’s Center at the Bedford Hills Correctonal Institute. She was a member of the Garden City Community Church from 1952 to 2002 where she was an active member.
Her hobbies included bridge, board games, puzzles, making strawberry jam, and spending time at her summer houses in East Marion and in the Adirondacks.
Mrs. Fisher is survived by her husband, David, her children, Douglas (wife Cheryl) and Diane (husband Ward), her step-grandchildren, Brian and Ashley, her nieces, Margaret (husband Edmund) and Carol, her nephew, Donald, her grand-nephew, Gabe and her grand-niece, Lara. She was predeceased by her sister, Mary Elizabeth.
A memorial service of remembrance and celebration for Dorothy’s life was held on May 25 at the Orient Congregational Church. She gave her body to the body donation program at Stony Brook University’s Department of Anatomical Science for use in research. Burial will be private and will take place at a later date. Memorial donations in Dorothy Fisher’s name may be made to a charity of your choice.
