Mets right-handed starter Dillon Gee has more than baseball on his mind these days. On Monday, a procedure on his right shoulder was performed at New York Presbyterian Hospital to remove a blood clot has sidelined the Amazin’s starter.
Currently on the 15-day disabled list, a Mets Press Release stated there was no timeframe for Gee’s return to baseball activity. He remains hospitalized for post operative observation as doctors try to determine the level of success they had in breaking up the clot.
The 26-year-old Gee, had been experiencing numbness in the fingers of his all important right hand when he was admitted to the hospital Sunday. As of the All-Star break Gee had garnered 6 wins and 7 losses, compiling an ERA of 4.10 in 17 starts.
Met fans, received the brutal dose of reality with the practiced guarded optimism that years of stunning failures have bred. However, with their team in the midst of a surprisingly competitive 2012 season, fans may need only look to Ace and number one starter Johan Santana to know shoulder problems aren’t necessarily the end of a career.
That’s cold comfort at the moment to the Flushing Faithful, as the Mets kick off the second half of the season by sweating out a crucial six-game road trip where they will face rising power Washington and archrival Atlanta, without Gee’s help.
The Mets are expected to recall lefty reliever Josh Edgin from Triple-A Buffalo to fill Gee’s active roster spot until Gee’s return.
