Earlier this month, Long Island author Carole P. Roman published her first children’s book, Captain No Beard—An Imaginary Tale of a Pirate’s Life. Roman told Anton Newspapers, “It is based loosely on a game I play with my grandson Alexander,” inspired by his charm and imagination.
In the story, Alexander “Captain No Beard” and his crew (a monkey, a lion, a frog, and his cousin and first mate, Hallie) set sail on their “mighty frigate” from his bedroom into a magical seafaring world in search of a distant land and treasures.
The captain and his crew encounter a turbulent storm brewing in the distance and a voice calling to them from the deep blue sea. “Shiver me timbers,” the crew cries. Is it a monster? Is it a mermaid? Alexander says it’s hard work being a captain.
When Anton Newspapers asked Roman why she chose to write this children’s book, she said, “Pirates! Who doesn’t love pirates? I have always loved pirates from Errol Flynn to Johnny Depp. One of my favorite memories was eating Monte Cristo sandwiches at the Pirates of the Caribbean ride in Disney with my kids.”
Roman is a former teacher turned businesswoman. She grew up in Syosset and taught at Matlin Junior High School in Plainview as a substitute teacher more than 35 years ago before leaving to grow her family. She is the mother of four and grandmother of three children. She lives in Oyster Bay Cove with her husband of 36 years. They run a family business from Bethpage.
Roman has a children’s yoga book due out soon, for her granddaughter, Hallie. Roman said she was inspired by Hallie’s courage and patience. In addition, another installment of Captain No Beard.
“I couldn’t think of a better audience than my grandchildren and their friends; I love reading to them and I adore their reactions,” said Roman. “It is splendid and a total joy to watch.”
This book is delightful and exciting from start to finish, with adorable illustration.
