On July 21, a USA U1-19 team that was 23 members strong won the gold medal in the International Lacrosse World Championships (ILWC) after defeating Canada in the Gold Medal game.
The United States team had narrowly lost to both Canada and the team from the Iroquois Nation during round robin play and then avenged both losses in the Championship bracket with the ultimate 10-8 victory over the Canadians for the gold medal.
In addition, Coach Flately, a Garden City High School (GCHS) football and lacrosse coach, was awarded the Federation of International Lacrosse Spirit of Lacrosse Award, presented to the person who best represents fair play, sportsmanship, dedication, leadership and a contribution to the game of lacrosse.
