Sunday night’s closing ceremonies marked the end to the 2012 Summer Olympics, and with it the end to Olympic triumph, disappointment and drama.

The ceremony drew an astounding 26.3 million viewers from the United Kingdom alone, which is equivalent to more than 80 percent of the total population, according to Fox News.

Some of the more notable performances were from the Pet Shop Boys, Annie Lennox, Ray Davies and George Michael.

Also, the once top grossing female group Spice Girls re-united to put on quite the show. The Who closed the ceremonies with a four-song set that finished with “My Generation.”

The frustration with NBC’s tape-delayed coverage continued last night when the ceremonies were interrupted with a one-hour-long preview of NBC’s new show, Animal Practice.

The recess was soon forgotten as the ceremony represented the “handover” to Brazil for the 2016 Olympic games when the mayor of London, Boris Johnson, handed the Olympic flag to IOC president, Jacques Rogge, who then finally passed it along to Eduardo Paes, the mayor of Rio de Janeiro.

The final medal count was successful for the United States who passed China in the closing days of the games, but even more successful for Great Britain. Britain’s gold medal count increased from one in Atlanta to Nine at Beijing to an incredible 29 in London.

In closing, the head of the Olympic organizing committee, Sebastian Coe stated: “We lit the flame, and we lit up the world,” Coe then went on to say that, “When our time came, Britain, we did it right.”

In all, the games disproved various doubters including Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney and persisted with very few issues.
