On Aug. 4 the Sagamore Yacht Club held this year’s Dooley Roosevelt Memorial Race. This event, which honors Julian K. Roosevelt, who was an Olympic sailor and a member of both Sagamore and Seawanhaka yacht clubs, is held alternate years by each club.
It was a bright, warm day and by race time there was a five- to ten-knot southwest breeze. The race was run as a pursuit race so boats started according to its handicap, with the slowest boat starting first and fastest last. The course took the competitors from the start in front of the Seawanhaka clubhouse out to the mouth of Oyster Bay by way of the lighthouse to Gong 1 and then across to Bell 17 and back to finish once again leaving the lighthouse on the channel side. The fleet was divided for scoring purposes in to a spinnaker and non-spinnaker division.
Fifteen boats took part in the race: Six in the spinnaker division, which was won by Black Pearl skippered by M. Gerling, and nine in the jib and main division, which was won by Luff Story skippered by J. Bernstein.
