Annual prostate cancer awareness event to showcase classic cars at Sears Auto Center
Hicksville will act as an outdoor showroom for hundreds of classic and antique cars on Sunday, Sept. 9 as Long Island Cruzin’ For a Cure, a nonprofit organization dedicated to fighting prostate cancer among men, rolls into the Sears Auto Center on Route 106/107 starting at 9 a.m.
The event, which last year featured 535 cars and more than 1,800 spectators, will also host free prostate cancer testing (PSA) for men through North Shore-LIJ. Sandy Kane, event founder, noted that one in six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in his lifetime and that more than 230,000 cases were recorded in the United States last year alone.
“None of the money collected goes to a car club, a promoter or for administrative overhead. All of the proceeds collected go to prostate cancer testing and education here on Long Island. Most men say ‘it won’t happen to me’ or ‘I will do it next week.’ Next week could be too late. PSA testing is quick and painless and could save your life. I know because it saved my life,” Kane said.
Now in its seventh year, the event has grown significantly each year and offered 286 PSA screening tests last year – with 15 possible cases discovered – in addition to showcasing some of Long Island’s most unique rides.
“This test is not the complete answer but will indicate if there is the possibility of a problem. Then go back out and enjoy the show,” Kane added.
Cruizin’ For a Cure will feature newly introduced “how to” clinics, a series of half-hour presentations on car care and restoration techniques, as well as a “car corral,” which displays various attendee cars that are on sale. Live music, raffles and children’s events are also planned throughout the day, which will conclude around 4 p.m.
Sponsorships, vendor booths and car showing spots are still available for registration. For more information, email info@licruizinfora cure.com, call 888-LICRUIZ or write P.O. Box 604, Jericho, NY 11753.
