Five-time NBA champ Kobe Bryant is probably one of the few NBA players who sulks for days—or maybe even weeks—if the Lakers season ends in disappointment.
But who knew that his wife, Vanessa, cares about winning just as much as he does.
In an interview with New York Magazine about the wives of basketball players, Vanessa revealed that any man married to her needs to be good enough to bring home a championship—every year.
“I certainly would not want to be married to somebody that can’t win championships,” she told the magazine, according to multiple reports. “If you’re sacrificing time away from my family and myself for the benefit of winning championships, then winning a championship should happen every single year.”
Vanessa was then criticized for those comments, and she took to TMZ to explain what she meant:
“I’m sad to hear that comments in my New York Magazine interview are being misconstrued and taken out of context. I have and will continue to support my husband’s dreams…I have been with Kobe for 13 years. I accepted his marriage proposal PRIOR to him winning any of his 5 championships with his teammates…For anyone to think otherwise is wrong. It is not about being married to a ‘winner’ it is about our sacrifice as a family.”
Mrs. Bryant filed for divorce last year, but they are still together, and it seems like they’ve worked things out.
Bryant, of course, has a good shot at winning another title after the Lakers brought in two stars during the offseason to bolster the squad.
Steve Nash was signed early in the offseason and the Lakers went ahead and traded for Dwight Howard, who finally got his wish to be traded from the Orlando Magic.
So it’s good chance the Bryant’s will have another championship to celebrate in the near future.
