Editorial: An Unsolicited Testimonial

We heard from Paige Dawson that the recent visit to the Old Orchard Museum was just great.

Paige Dawson of Laffey Associates attended the Oyster Bay-East Norwich Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours meeting. It was held at Sagamore Hill National Historic Site at the Old Orchard House Museum. She said, “It was swell- —with some of the items from the main house displayed there. It was catered by Mark Fox of Canterbury Ales. The food was enjoyed by all, as the shrimp and oysters and sliders were all but decimated.”

The event was held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Shari Lee Cope Dembowski, OBEN CC administrative assistant said, “It was very interesting. There are pieces from the house  in display cases in the museum. There is his china from the White House with his crest on it. There is a portrait of his wife Edith wearing her blue Red Cross cap and the cap is actually there on display. There is a piece of President Abraham Lincoln’s hair, in a locket on a ring, that was Theodore Roosevelt’s that is actually there on display.”

“It’s a marvelous place. The china, the knick knacks, the ivory, everything was just so beautiful and so close to see. It is behind glass, but in the actual house, the items are in the room and they aren’t as close.”

She said, “I had a private tour with SHNHS Supervisor Tom Ross and it was wonderful. The place is great and more people should see it.”

Shari had one hint for people going to the Old Orchard Museum, “Wear comfortable shoes. I wore heels and they drove me back to my car.”

Paige Dawson also had an interesting walk back in the dark. Luckily, John Delillo had a mini-flashlight that was a great help going along the unlighted gravel path.

Paige added, “The OBEN Chamber of Commerce is doing a combination fund-raiser/holiday party like last year on Nov. 29, one week after Thanksgiving Day. Mark it on your calendar.”

Ms. Dembowski said, “It will be held at Sagamore Yacht Club. It is called Light Up The Holidays.” Call the chamber for reservations and information at 922-6464.

Talking to Ms. Dawson is always a delight, as it chatting with Shari Cope Dembowski. They are both integral members of the Oyster Bay-East Norwich Chamber of Commerce, and don’t their comments make you want to visit the Old Orchard Museum? They certainly made me want to visit. There is nothing like an unsolicited testimonial to make things come alive. Thank you ladies.
