On Sunday, Nov. 18 the Farmingdale-Bethpage Historical Society of Long Island (FBHSLI) will present “From Battleground to Empire State: New York and the Legacy of the War of 1812” in cooperation with the New York Council for the Humanities. Alfred Ronzoni of the Greater Astoria Historical Society will give the presentation.
This year marks the 200th year following the War of 1812, most often considered as one of America’s forgotten wars. It was a critical event in establishing the United States as an independent nation. This war and the absence of another war for more than 30 years gave rise to a remarkable period of economic, political, social, and technological transformation spearheaded by the state of New York. In this program, series participants will learn about how New York came to be known as the “Empire State.”
The program, the first of the society’s winter lecture series, will be held at the Farmingdale Public Library on Merritts Road at 2 p.m.
