G.C. Pool Interviews For 2013 Season

The Department of Recreation and Parks will be holding interviews for prospective pool employees  (you must be a graduating high school senior or older) for the upcoming 2013 season on the following dates:

Thursday, Dec. 27
Friday, Dec. 28  
Thursday, Jan. 3
Friday, Jan. 4
Tuesday, Jan. 8
Wednesday, Jan. 9
Thursday, Jan. 10

Between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

All former and prospective employees must interview if they are planning to work at the pool next season. Please pick up an application and sign up for your interview in the Recreation Office at 108 Rockaway Ave. For further information call 516 465-4075.

Swimming Lesson Registration

The Garden City Recreation Department will be conducting children’s swimming lessons for village residents at the Adelphi University swimming pool in Woodruff Hall on Saturday mornings. Your child must be 6 years of age by the start of the program to participate. This 9-week session will begin Saturday, Dec. 8.  Classes are taught by Red Cross-certified instructors.  The cost is $75.

Level 1 – Introduction to water skills
Level 2 – For children who have taken a lesson but need to learn fundamental skills
Level 3 – Will build on fundamental skills by providing guided practices
Level 4 – Develops confidence in the strokes learned and improve other aquatic skills
Level 5 – Provides further coordination and refinement of strokes
Level 6P – Personal Water Safety – stresses survival floating, treading water, swimming in clothes, etc.
Level 6F – Water Fitness – sessions will cover learning training techniques, how to use fins, kickboards, pace, clock, etc.

Please make selections carefully as fees are not returnable.

To register: by mail only, no walk-in registrations will be accepted until Tuesday, Dec. 4. The recreation center cannot be held responsible for delays in the mail. To register, pick up an application at the recreation office at 108 Rockaway Ave. or download it from www.gardencityrecreation.org. You can also make your own by listing your child’s name, address, phone number, birth date, grade he/she will be entering in September and the session and classes for which you are registering with a first and second choice. Mail all information with full payment to the Garden City Recreation Department at 108 Rockaway Ave.  Please make all checks payable to the “Inc. Village of Garden City.”

Letters To Santa

It’s time to send letters to Santa and the recreation department will speed up the process. A special Santa’s Mailbox will be set up in the waiting area of the recreation department’s administrative offices at 108 Rockaway Ave. beginning Dec. 3. Children can drop their letters in the mailbox and Santa will send them a personalized reply. Santa’s mailbox will be available through Dec. 20.

Christmas Candy Contest

In addition to sending their letters to Santa, kids can take a chance at guessing the number of candy pieces in the jar next to Santa’s Mailbox and the child whose guess is closest to the actual number will win the jar, candy and all. As with Santa’s mailbox, the candy contest will be available from Dec. 3 to Dec. 20.

A Visit From Santa

Santa will visit the recreation office at 108 Rockaway Ave. for visits and photos on Dec. 11 and 13 from 3 p.m.-4:15 p.m. The recreation department staff will be available to take and print photos. There is no fee for a photo but a donation of a small gift for Toys for Tots would be appreciated.

After School Program For Grades K And 1

The Garden City Recreation Department is pleased to announce that this winter, the recreation staff will conduct a gym program for children in kindergarten and first grade.

This program will consist of organized games and activities in a supervised setting.  This program will run on Wednesdays from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in St. Paul’s Field House beginning Dec. 5 and ending Feb. 13. The program is free but a permission slip in necessary. For further information, please contact the recreation office at 516-465-4075.

Meeting Dates – Dec. 5, 12, 19; Jan. 2, 9, 16, 23, 30; Feb. 6 and 13

Sneakers must be worn for any activity in the field house. Although this is free, drop off program, a registration form is needed and can be picked up at the recreation office or filled out on the first day your child attends the program.

Please note: Once the children are in our facility, they will not be allowed to leave unless accompanied by an adult. Please come into the building to pick up your child.

After School Gym Program For Grades 2 To 6

The Garden City Recreation Department is pleased to announce that this winter, Rich Anderson and the recreation staff will conduct a gym program for children in grades 2 – 6.

This free program will consist of organized games and activities in a supervised setting.  It will run from 3:30 to 5:45 p.m. in St. Paul’s Field House beginning the week of Dec. 3 through Feb. 15 according to the following schedule:

Grades 4-6  Mondays from 3:30 – 5:45 p.m.

Grades 2-3 Fridays from 3:30 – 5:45 p.m.

Sneakers must be worn for any activity in the field house. Although this is free, drop off program, a registration form is needed and can be picked up at the recreation office or filled out on the first day your child attends the program.

Note-Once the children are in our facility, they will not be allowed to leave unless accompanied by an adult. Please come into the building to pick up your child and please be prompt. For further information, please contact the recreation office at 516-465-4075.

Saturday Men’s Basketball At The Middle School

The recreation department will run its winter Saturday morning basketball program again at the Garden City Middle School’s gym beginning Saturday, Dec.1. This free program is for Garden City residents, college age or older and is strictly pick-up in nature. The program runs from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. each Saturday until Feb. 16. The program will not run on Dec. 29.
